It was the weekend and I'm spending it with my brother and mother as my dad was at work for the weekend. What he called work was probably messing around with another woman, my mother know this, but she did drugs to feel better. I sit with my brother on his bed as he draws and I sing a song. "What are you drawing?" I ask while tilting my head and hum my song. "I'm drawing flowers. I'll paint over it soon so you can feel it." He responds while gently resting his hand mine. "Thank you." I said in a gentle tone smiling at him. "Anything for you." He responds while gently squeezing my hand. We heard a door close down stairs, and lazy feet walk up the steps. I felt Ian pull me in closer to his body protectively. "Don't worry Ian, it's only mom." I say as I felt him shift. "You sure?" He asks in a worried tone. Before I could answer the door swung open. "Hey kids!" I heard Lori's voice from the door way. "I'm home. You want pizza, 'cause I can order one?" I heard her voice. It wasn't like when I was younger, when her voice had a beautiful ring to it. Now her voice sounds raspy and cracks every now and again. I smelt a foul smell of nicotine and hid my face in Ian's shirt to block out the smell. "No thank you mom, we're good." Ian responded in a rare monotone voice. "Hey, why aren't you kids at school?" She asked stumbling over some of her words. "It's Saturday and Montana doesn't go to school." Ian responded sounding annoyed. "You know what!" Mom started "Montana you can go to school. I don't need you here all day." She said while shifting on the floor. The floor boards creaked under her as I heard her walk towards us. "In fact, you can go tomorrow." She said lazily. "Tomorrow's Sunday." Ian said in a sarcastic tone. "Right, right. Okay! I will sign you up today, and you can go Monday." She said as the floor boards creaked under her. Her footsteps soon faded downstairs. "Do you think she means it?" I asked trying not to get my hopes up. "I sure hope so, don't worry, I can help her for you." He said while gently resting his head on mine. "Thank you." I leaned in closer to him and sang my song.
"You are my sun shine, my only sunshine."
He sang the next verse, "you make me happy when sky's are grey." He looked at me lovingly "you'll never know dear, how much I love you." He hugged me closer "please don't take my sunshine away." I soon fell asleep in his arms as he continued to sing the song.
I sat there in the flowery meadow atop the hill on a sunny morning. The sky was bright blue and the breeze was warm on my skin. I looked over and saw my brother drawing the flowers on a sketch pad. "Hey Mon, look at this!" Ian said while calling me over. He had the brightest smile a little child could have. I quickly jumped through the flowers and tall grass to get over to him. When I looked over his shoulder I didn't see anything, it was just a blank page. He looked at me confused of my reaction. My face then burned and I realized the tears falling down my cheeks. The world then sped by as I fell to the ground. I couldn't see anything but my younger self surrounded in black. "You worthless little brat." I heard an all too familiar voice say. I tried to turn to the voice but was quickly pushed to the floor. "You're the reason we can't be a normal family." I heard my father scream at me again. I then was thrown across the floor. "No, I'm not bad." I said as I cried more. "Yes, you are bad. You're the reason Ian is so ashamed of his own life." I started to cry more at he mention of my brothers pain. "You should just kill your self. Nobody wants you in this world-" I was thrown again. "-it's all you. You're the problem, and you always will be. You are a waste." The voice kept screaming at me but then it became a choir of voices saying it. I curled up in a ball as shadows surround me. They all have flaming expressions on their faces all in anger at me. "Go away." I screamed as they all began to reach for me. I kept squirming to get away from them. They all started whispering my name and getting closer. "Montana," they all said in a hushed voice at different times so my ears were buzzing at the hissing. "Montana!" They all said louder at me as they kept trying to get to me. "No! Leave me alone!" I scream trying to get away from them. "Montana."
I felt a pair of arms wrap around my shoulders as I'm woken up from my dream. I immediately bury my face in the crook of Ian's neck as he rocked us back and forth. "You're okay now Mon, I got you." He said while stroking my hair in a comforting way. He's got me. "I'm sorry Ian." I felt him pull back slightly. "What are you talking about?" He said while wiping some tears off my cheeks. "I'm the reason you're so ashamed of your life." I felt the tears welling up and slowly trickle down my cheeks. I felt Ian's muscles tense and fled under me. "Montana, who told you that." I could hear the pure anger in his voice. "In my dream, they said I made you ashamed of your own life." I said while my own whimpers interrupted me. "Yes, I am sad that you lost your sight, but what would make me ashamed was if I lost you." He put emphasis on the statement about me and held me close. "Thank you Ian." I hugged him close as I fell back now into a peaceful sleep in his arms.
