Chapter 5 - That was a really disgusting analogy

It's difficult to explain the atmosphere of the school after precisely six and a half hours of being locked in. It's nine o'clock, and people are growing tired. We can hear them from the newspaper room, and it's not a pretty sound. People are agitated. With nowhere really to sleep, everyone is moving around, trying to find a comfortable spot to spend the night. I'm pretty sure the tougher kids have already called dibs on the infirmary, so those beds are taken. From the conversations we're overhearing, Leo and I have also found out that a lot of people have moved to the gym, probably because there's a lot of space so they won't overheat with the tight proximity.

It's time now, Leo told me, to go and show Rowan that he's not the only one who can have a bit of 'fun'. But as much as I want to get some revenge, I just can't seem to bring myself to do it. I mean, what's lying going to do? It's not going to fix anything, heck, it'll probably just cause more problems. But still, Leo's plan is swaying me. It's convincing enough to make me at least consider it.

"We don't have to," he says as we linger behind the locked door.

"No, I want to," I decide. "It's just a lot."

"Think about what he did," Leo says, and although it sends a pain to the deep pit of my stomach, I do. And admittedly, it pushes me to open the door and step into the hallway.

"Remind me how we're starting this?"

"We're going to walk right up to him and I'm going to confront him," Leo says as we begin walking. "You've just got to act as though you don't want me to say anything, like grab my arm and tell me to shut up, stuff like that."

"Right," I nod firmly. "Piece of cake." Leo sends me a look and I sigh. "If it looks like I'm going to mess up then just tell me to be quiet."

"Point taken," Leo says, and we wing a right to the large room we left everyone in. We come to a halt just before the swinging double doors, and Leo faces his body to mine. He places a hand on either of my shoulders and grins. "Are you ready?"

"Nope," I say, which only makes his smile widen more.

"Brilliant, let's go," he says, taking my hand in his. With a smirk at my questioning face, he laughs. "Practise."

"Sure, practise," I say sarcastically. His hand is warm in mine and I have to admit with the heavy weight of his firm grip, I feel oddly grounded. Usually I'm lingering with my head in the clouds, but with Leo I feel human. I feel like a teenage girl, which may not be exactly human sometimes, but close enough.

"Remember what we talked about?" he asks, and I nod.

"Yeah, piece of cake," I snort, and he raises an eyebrow.

"Well okay, you seem pretty confident so let's test those acting skills of yours," Leo says, suddenly tugging me noisily through the double doors. And the second he does, I realise I'm not going to need to act. This is stupid. This plan isn't going to work. Rowan will see right through it, and I'll be done. I'll look so utterly pathetic that I may as well crawl under a rock and die.

I become aware of people looking at us, and once I do I cling onto Leo's arm, attempting to pull him back, or to stop him at least. He storms across to where Rowan is sitting, and a chilling silence envelopes the room. All eyes are on us now, and I feel a slight heat creep onto my cheeks. I let my eyes fall to Rowan, and he's looking confused and admittedly a little mad. Beside him is Joanna who is looking at me with guilty eyes and a pleading look. I'm pissed that she didn't try to come and find me, but I shrug the feeling off. Who cares?
