The Chase (Sequel to The Cuddling Game)

Answers

I walk through the front doors of the M&Q Law Firm. The lady at the front desk smiles at me.
“Hello, how can I help you?”
“Hi. Fiona told me to talk to you.”
She puts up a finger, shuffling through her papers.
“Are you Chase Parker?”
“Yes, that’s me.”
She picks up the phone and holds in a button. She waits a moment before talking with the person on the phone.
“I’m sorry to disturb you, sir, but is Ms. Lyons back at her desk?”
A muffled response is given and the woman smiles.
“Thank you so much.”
She hangs up the phone and looks up at me.
“Mr. Mathers says that she is out of the office right now. I’ll take the message.”
“Mr. Mathers? As in, Jonathan Mathers?”
She looks at me like I have three heads.
“Yes. That is his name.”
“What is Fiona’s position?”
“She is Mr. Mathers’ secretary.”
Son of a gun.
“Did she have a kid a few years ago?”
“Yes, but I don’t know what happened with the child. She never talks about it.”
“Was it a baby boy?”
“I’m sorry, but I would like to take your message for Ms. Lyons so that I may get back to my job.”
Wow is she rude.
“Please tell her my answer is no.”
She jots that down on a sticky note, looking back up at me with a bored expression.
“Is that all?”
“Tell her to shove it.”
With those words, I leave the building.
