I woke up to a tongue rapidly licking my face. I giggled, lightly pushing Tucker off of me so that he tumbled down onto my blanket. The morning was still dark, but streaks of pink, orange and red were peeking out.

I wasn't very tired at all, but when I checked the time on my phone, it said 5:11. I didn't need to be up until 6:15 for school, so I decided to take my extra hour to take Tucker on a walk.

I left a note on the counter for my mom, who usually gets up around 5:30 for work, and grabbed his leash. "C'mon Tucker, want to go for a walk?" He bounded over to me, skidded on the hard wood floor, and slid into the back of the couch. I laughed at his clumsiness and went over to pick him up and get going.

I shivered a little in my sleeping shorts and t-shirt as we stepped out into the morning chill. At first, Tucker started out well behaved, walking next to me or just in front of me, but after around 15 minutes, he seemed to decided that he didn't want to be the one on the walk anymore. So then he decided to start sprinting.

"TUCKER, NO!"

A boy on a bike riding through what seemed to be a paper route had, not paying attention, rode his bike right into Tucker's leash. He flew off the front of the bike, landing hard halfway on the sidewalk and halfway on the grass. I rushed over to see if he was okay.

"Oh my gosh, are you okay? I'm so sorry, he's super energetic and started to run and i'm a stick so I couldn't keep up-" The boy, having sat up during my rambling, just laughed. Once he had his head up, I could get a good look at him.

The thing that stood out to me the most was his eyes. They were a piercing blue, the kind that when you looked into them, it seemed like they could read you like an open book when you were normally closed up tight with three different locks.

He had the messy, curly type hair that looked like he had just rolled out of bed and sorta tried to brush through it but gave up.

His nose was, in the least weird way possible, perfect. Not at all crooked, perfectly sized, with freckles dusting along it and onto his cheeks. His front teeth were crooked in but blinding white when he opened his mouth to laugh.

I blushed when I caught myself staring, but I had to admit I liked what I saw. I blame it on 14 year old hormones.

I held a hand out to him to help him stand up. He had at least 3 inches on me, making me feel short as he stood up.

He let go of my hand and dusted off his pants. "Hi, I'm Jack. Jack Lancaster. I just moved in down the street." He said, pointing in the direction of my house.

I smiled sheepishly. "I'm Madison, Madison Lewis. I think you must be the family that moved in 2 doors down? I'm really sorry about my dog."

He laughed again. "It's no big deal. I'm perfectly fine. We must be your new neighbors, then. It will be nice to have a friend on our street, now. I was a little afraid I wouldn't be able to make very many friends."

We started to walk back the way we came. "Oh, I'm sure we would've crossed paths in the next few days anyway. There's always the whole,'We need to give the new neighbors a casserole so they're welcomed into the neighborhood,' thing, and then I'm sure our families will end up getting to know each other sometime."

He nudged my shoulder. "You're pretty cool, Mads." He said, trying out a new nickname.

I pretended to think about something deeply. "Hmm, Mads. I think I like it." He smiled. "I'm glad. Hey, would you want to meet up in front of our houses and walk to school together? I don't really know he way that well, and I don't know about you, but the bus isn't something i'm interested in this year."

I laughed at his disgusted expression. "Yeah, the bus kind of sucks. Sure, I'm cool with that. I have a really good shortcut we can take too. Meet me outside at 7:00?"

He leaned down to pat Tucker goodbye, then when so put my hand out to shake one more time, he pulled into a quick, friendly hug. "I'll see you at 7:00." Then, he turned and hopped onto his bike, riding the last few feet up to his house.

I walked back inside with a smile on my face. My first new friend in a long while. My mountain seems to be moving in a really good direction.

A/N
Hey! So Madison meets Jack! What do you think of Jack? He reminds me a lot of a friend I have, you could say he's based off of a person.

so jack is basically planned to be madison's best friend at first, but in all the clíches, best friends may fall in love. we don't know though....
