Chapter 1

"Hello? Are you okay?" Asriel's voice rang out softly throughout the flowery room. The human's hair fell below the sides of her neck, as her deep, brown eyes fluttered open. As they faded over to Ariel's green eyes, they flickered a bright red, causing Asriel to jump back slightly.

"Chara." the human whispered. Asriel came back up close to the girl, raising a light-colored eyebrow.

"Pardon?" he asked, staring into the teenager's eyes with curiosity.

"My name is Chara." she responded. Ariel smiled slowly, getting on one knee, and holding out his fluffy, white paw.

"Take my hand. You don't want to get too many flowers in your hair." Asriel giggled, as Chara, reluctantly, grabbed his hand. She stared at his hand for a moment, before quickly jerking hers away from his.

"Thanks. I..." Chara suddenly cut herself off with pitch black tears going down her face. "...oh!"

"Oh my! Chara, are you alright?" Asriel questioned, wiping a strand of the black tears from her cheek. Why are her tears black? Asriel pondered. Chara looked down at her own hands, squeezing her fists tighter, and then lighter.

"I guess so," she looked back up at Asriel's eyes. "who are you?"

"I'm Asriel! It's, uh... pleasing to meet you, but, if you excuse me, may I ask you something?" Asriel asked quietly. Chara nodded, smiling the brightest smile Asriel's ever seen.

"Go ahead." she replied. Asriel cringed at himself, gripping the sleeves of his sweater with his thumbs.

"A-are you, by any chance, a, uh... a human?" he questioned. Chara furrowed her eyebrows, and stood up, obviously taller than Ariel. He clenched his fists again, terrified. "Of course, uh... y-you don't have to answer that...!" Chara giggled at his fear.

"Yes. Yes, I am a human. Why did you ask me that?" Chara tilted her head to the side. Asriel, tense in the shoulders, glanced to his left, then right, and then right back at Chara.

"No reason. No reason at all." he lied. In reality, Asriel was petrified. What would his mother think of this? What would his father think of this? Asriel snapped himself from his thoughts, and grabbed Chara's hand. "N-now, come with me." Chara's smile shined at Asriel.

"Okay!" she chirped, shutting her eyes slowly, opening them back up again.

"Hey, uh, this is my house! Does it look cozy to you, Chara...?" Asriel asked, obviously embarrassed to ask. Chara giggled to herself, examining the house from a distance.

"This place looks nice. Very cozy indeed, if I do say so myself." Chara confirmed, smirking a small smirk at Asriel. His eyes lit up, and he laughed.

"Oh! Really? Awesome!" Asriel cheered, as he practically dragged Chara into the small, bakery-like house.

As the new friends stepped inside, the smell of butterscotch-cinnamon pie struck Chara in the nose. She smiled, brushing the red hair from her eyes, and spotting a young woman, looking much like Asriel, sitting in a big, brown, comfy chair, reading a book.

"Oh! Hello, Asriel! Welcome home... oh? Who's this?" the lady asked, the small, oval-shaped glasses slipping down her nose slightly. Asriel gripped Chara's hand tighter, and grinned awkwardly at his mother.

"Th-this is Chara." he stuttered. The goat-mom raised an eyebrow at Chara, but smiled kindly.

"Hello, there, Chara. I'm Toriel." she stood up, out from her chair, shaking Chara's hand gently, after Asriel stepped back. Chara smiled at Toriel with sad eyes. She remembered her mother, and how she'd give her that smile. Suddenly, the black tears appeared on Chara's face once again. Scared, Toriel jumped back, her eyes widening.
