It was a beautiful day at sea. The sun was shining high in the sky. There was a light breeze pushing the ship further on the journey to find land. The crew hadn't seen a bird in days. The captain of the vessel was watching the sky from his post. Suddenly a seagull flew by the ship. A smile came to the weary captain's face. He opens his mouth to shout, but someone from the crew beat him to it.

"Land ho!" hollered the crew member from the crow's nest. The captain steered the ship toward the bird and followed the patch of white that was leading them to land. The wind pushed the ship forward at a faster pace. It wasn't long before the peaks of mountains jutted out from the horizon.

"We're almost there boys!" Shouted the captain. The crew cried out in joy. The vessel was only a few lengths from land when the waves got rougher, and a dark shadow passed beside the ship. The captain furrowed his brows, but the rest of the crew didn't see the shadow pass by. They were too focused on the land in front of them. The captain began to steer away from the island. A bad feeling had settled in the pit of his stomach. Something wasn't right here. His first mate came to the captain's side.

"Sir, the island's that way," he pointed to the green island.

"Somethings not right in the water. I don't quite know what it is, but it's nothing good," the captain answered. The waves rose tremendously and rocked the vessel back and forth. The captain was attempting to keep the wheel steady. A roar like no other was heard by the ship. The crew turned to see where the noise was coming from. A huge cobalt blue dragon shot from the clear water and hit the side of the ship. The vessel went on its side and submerged once more. The dragon roared loudly at the pirates.

"Monster!" A crew member shouted from deck. The captain steered away but kept his eyes on the dragon. The King of the Sea decided to finally show himself. That had been the whole reason why he wanted to come out here was to get a glimpse of the creature, and it seems as though he got his wish. The dragon spat water on deck. The King of the Sea looked at the captain. The King's crystal blue eyes stared into the captain's sea green one's. The dragon closed its mouth and met the captain at eye level. The crew was in awe of the creature and its sudden change in demeanor. The captain walked to the edge of the ship and met the dragon there.

"After thirty years, you've finally made an appearance," the captain said. The dragon moved his head closer to the captain. He chuckled and pet the dragon's scaled head.

"I almost thought that you wouldn't show up. I'm glad you proved me wrong," the captain was trying to hold in tears. The last time he had seen the King of the Sea he was only a boy. He was only five at the time, but he remembered the giant beast, and the connection the King had to his father. It was almost as if the dragon sensed the captain's sadness.

"He's gone. Has been for a year now. I couldn't work up the nerve to sail out here. This is the first time I've been on a ship since he died," he explains. The dragon cries and licks the captain -- which was a bath for him--, and whined a bit.

"I could never understand why my father had such an obsession with you, but I understand now. All of my father's adventures were always centered around finding you. I just wanted to thank you for showing up that day. He was almost ready to give up," the captain explained. His crew all together had stopped their duties and was now watching the exchange between captain and dragon. The waves had become calm once more. He patted the dragon's head once more before turning away from the King.

"Until we meet again," the captain tipped his hat to the mighty beast. They steered away from the island and began to make their way back home. The King of the Sea gave a mighty roar. The captain looked back at the dragon and watched him walk onto the island they had tried to dock on. The captain was in awe. He had never seen the King out of the water. Dark blue wings hung by his sides and light blue spines started at his head and ended at the tip of his double finned tail. The King opened his giant wings and unfolded them. With one swift flap of his mighty wings the winds grew stronger and blew the ship a hundred or so lengths from the island. The captain smiled and with one last glance at the dragon, he turned back around and watched the horizon.

"So, you dragged us all the way out here, on a two days trip, to see a dragon?" His first mate asked.

"You sound angry. You should be honored. The King of the Sea isn't always so nice to pirates. Most don't make it out of his island," the captain responded. The first mate rolled his eyes.

"I don't suggest doing that. I might just turn around and let you face the King yerself," the captain said to the first mate.

"Ya wouldn't,"

The captain grinned and kept his eyes on the horizon. He was glad that he had seen the King. The creature deserved to know that his friend was gone. The dragon deserved that much. The captain knew that no one else from his father's old crew would sail out to the islands. None of them were brave enough to face the creature. He never went back to see the King of the Sea. In fact, he never set foot on a ship after that day. He had seen the King, and that was enough of an adventure to last a lifetime.
