Chapter Three

I have learned a lot about myself in the past twelve hours. I have had so much time to learn about myself because one thing I learned is that I don't sleep. No matter how hard I try, I cannot.

The next is, I have no sense of smell. Last night, when Gabe's friends were over, they kept farting from what I saw. I couldn't smell a thing. It's weird not being able to smell. I still try though.

Another, no one can see me except for Gabe. He tried introducing me to his friends, but they couldn't see me. They thought Gabe was crazy. When he went to the bathroom, I overheard his friends talking. Well, maybe not overheard. I was eavesdropping.

"He's lost it man."

"Did you see anyone when he was introducing us to his "friend"?" Everyone shook their heads. "Me neither man. Maybe he's got some imaginary friend."

That got me mad. But then I realized, this is pretty crazy. If I were in their place, I wouldn't believe it either.

I have also learned something that I always dreamed of doing when I was alive, walking through walls. I first did it by accident. I was seeing if I could feel the wall as a solid, but I lost my balance and went right through. When you go through it, all you see is black until you reach the other side.

I've been walking through walls for the past hour until Gabe came downstairs from his sleep.

"You were up early." He says between yawns.

"I don't sleep." I told him. He gives me a look like he is a bit surprised but mostly a look of knowing. Like he knew.

"I'm not surprised. You can do whole bunch of weird stuff. And most of them are opposite of what humans do." That's true. I wonder why I didn't think about it.

"I was going to make you a special breakfast, but, well, you know. I can't hold anything." I say kind of sadly. I wish being able to make my family and friends meals.

"It's fine. I don't usually eat anything special. Maybe just a granola bar or a bowl of cereal." I get taken aback on that. Nothing big? My parents always made something big for me. Every morning.

"It is not okay. You have to eat something filling. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. I'll tell you what, tonight, you and I will go to the store, I'll tell you what to buy, and tomorrow morning, I will tell you how to make it."

He seems unsure but eventually agrees. Maybe we will make scrambled eggs. Or maybe French Toast! I get lost in thought, I didn't see Gabe walk away. What brought me back was when the phone rang.

"Hello?" Gabe says. I can't really hear who it is or what he is saying. All I know is that this mysterious person brings bad news. Gabe gasps.

"O-o-okay bye." He says his voice trembling to the point where any human cannot understand him. But I'm no human.

Gabe falls to his knees crying. I want to know what happened. But, I have learned never to push someone into telling you something. I keep waiting. And waiting. I'm not sure how long I'm waiting before he finally gets up.

"What happened? Take your time if you need too. I'm here for you." More waiting. Finally he responds.

"Do you remember Al from last night?" I nod even though I don't exactly. "He's... Hes...." More waiting. "Dead."
