"Faiye!" A voice yelled. A girl's eyes flung open, darting wildly as she looked over her familiar surroundings. She let out a yawn, settling back onto her pillow and letting out a contented sigh. Oh. Right, it was a school day. The girl let out a frustrated groan and sat up, her light brown hair sticking every which way.
"Faiye!" her mother called again.
"Coming mom!" Faiye yelled back as she got out of bed.
"Hurry up and get dressed you're gonna be late for school," her mother reminded her from downstairs.
Faiye looked over at her clock, eyes starting in surprise. It was already 7:35! She had to leave at 7:40 if she wanted to get to school on time! Faiye tore through her closet, selecting a short-sleeved black Hogwarts shirt. What could she say? She was a nerd through and through. She stuck on her jeans and adjusted her glasses on the bridge of her nose. Faiye mentally slapped herself, remembering she'd fallen asleep with them on while reading the night before. Faiye looked at her clock again. Crap! It read 7:38 on the clock's dark red surface.
She catapulted towards the door, launching herself downstairs. Faiye picked up her neon blue tennis shoes and pulled them on as fast as she could, starting her little counting game to make herself go faster. '1, 2, 3, 4, 5' she thought as she stuck her foot in the first shoe. '25, 26, 27, 28' Faiye thought, frantically tying the last shoe. '29!' She grabbed her backpack, her book, and her lunchbox before stuffing a piece of toast in her mouth.
"Bye Mom! Bye Dad!" she yelled as she ran out of the house and down the sidewalk. Her school was about a 20 minute walk away, and it wouldn't be good to be late for freshman finals!
Faiye slowed her run to a halt, bending over and breathing heavily. 'I should really get a roller-backpack' Faiye thought as her heavy textbooks weighed her down. Her father refused to drive her to school, saying a little exercise was needed after spending so much time on the internet. Faiye huffed as she stood up again. She was already abnormally skinny, any more and she'd look like a walking skeleton!
After taking a moment more to catch her breath, Faiye started walking again. She turned the corner, only 10 minutes away from the school. The woods were off to her right, and Faiye looked at them longingly, wishing she could run off and explore. Much more fun than going to school.
Faiye shook her head, resuming her walk. 'I should really stop dreaming about fantasy stuff,' she thought. 'Not like any of it's actually going to happen.' She used to think that kind of stuff was real; fairies and goblins and such. Faiye smiled lightly as she recalled meeting with her two friends in 7th grade, convinced they had powers and had to save the world. That kind of stuff was over though, she had to focus on passing freshman year!(She had all A's, but hey- always gotta be careful!) Sometimes she still believed it though, desperately wishing for the world she'd read so much about in storybooks.
Faiye lightly pinched herself. 'Stop it Faiye!' she scolded herself. 'Alright let's see... Research report on slavery due today, umm... Oh! Math test! Alright; 4x+5px-7x-9px is....'
Faiye stopped, a strange feeling telling her not to go forward. Wait. Was her necklace getting warmer. Faiye touched her necklace lightly; the blue, green, white and red stones seeming to emanate a bit of warmth. She wasn't quite sure where she'd gotten her necklace, Faiye just had a feeling it was important, if that made any sense. Something was off, Faiye held the necklace up to her face, looking at it closer. Strange, there was a red stone now dangling from it. Before there'd been only the blue, green, and white. Faiye was sure she'd never seen this one before.... could she simply never have noticed it? No, she would've definitely remember seeing this one; the shining surface seemed like it held a sparkling ember inside of it, the fire whisp shape glowing bright- WAIT. Glowing!? But that's silly! Isn't it? Just imagination, right?
