Dart started to drift into consciousness, the world fading in and out of hazy blurs. Dart felt calm for a moment, in that state. Almost awake, but almost asleep.
Then it changed. The hazy environment became choked with smoke, grey gasses filling the air. Heat came from everywhere, and a roaring could be heard from outside. Dart jumped up and immediately regretted it. Thick smoke filled her lungs when she breathed in, and she broke off into a fit of coughing. Tears sprung at the edges of her amber eyes and she swayed on her feet. Twist blinked awake behind her, ears perking at the noise.
"Dart..?" Her voice sounded groggy and she looked half-asleep. Dart nudged her quickly, snapping her into wakefulness.
"..Dart?!" Her voice sounded urgent now, and she looked around with wide eyes.
"What's.."
"No time!" Dart yelled over the overwhelming roar outside. "Come with me!"
The two sisters sprinted outside, and were instantly stopped in their tracks. Dart blinked at the brightness of the scene, and tried to process what she saw. Red. Orange. Yellow. Everywhere. Fire raged all around, destroying everything it touched. The heat was overwhelming, and Dart stumbled back, squeezing her eyes shut. She tried to scream, but smoke filled her lungs and no sound came. Dart felt her vision grow clouded. Dark spots swam before her eyes, and she stumbled and felt herself slip. Twist screaming her name was the last thing she heard before she hit the ground.

...

Twist breathed heavily, smoke making it hard to see. She looked around, trying to find any possible escape routes. Instead she found her sister falling to the ground.
"DART!" Twist screamed. Dart hit the ground, her eyes rolling back. Twist felt tears swell in her eyes.
Okay. Okay... Twist frantically tried to think of something to do, something that would save her and Dart from becoming a pile of ashes. Nothing came to mind. She stumbled and darkness clouded at the edges of her vision.
No. NO. Twist panicked and started to breathe heavily. Big mistake. The smoke she inhaled seemed to dry her insides and she broke off into a coughing fit. The fire was getting closer. She turned in frantic circles, looking for any openings in the massive wall of flame. She took in a shaky breath as she realized that the only possible escape was an area where the flames were considerably lower. Twist turned to look at Dart's unconscious form.
I wouldn't be able to get her over. She realized with dawning horror. Not without burning one of us. The thought of any of the flying sparks around her actually touching her horrified Twist, and she wanted to rule out any plan that involved that opening. Unfortunately, that was the best plant she had. Twist grabbed Dart by the scruff, dragging her over to the shorter part of the fire as fast as she could.
Well, she thought. Here I go..
She took a deep breath before stumbling forward and hurling Dart over the wall. The first thing she felt after that was pain. The pain of being burned alive. Twist screamed, stumbling out of the flames. She looked at herself frantically. Her pale coat no longer looked cream. It looked bright orange. Leaping flames stuck to Twist's fur, and she let out a choked cry of pain and horror. Black spots darted in and out of her view, and the pain grew more and more overwhelming. She stumbled around before tumbling down a small cliff. A sizzling sound filled the air around her, and she felt the biggest relief she had ever felt. Twist's pelt cooled as water rushed over her, and all her pain faded. If it was up to her, she would have never left.
But Dart was still up there. With tremendous effort, Twist dragged herself out of the stream she had fallen into, and back up the ridge. She was breathing heavily by the end of it, and all her muscles were screaming at her to stop. Twist forgot all of that, however, when she saw the Dart. She was still on the ground away from the wall, but the flames were edging closer to her.
No. Not Dart. Please.. Twist's thoughts jumbled together, but everything in her was screaming to go to Dart. She ran as fast as she could in her state, and it seemed to take forever to reach her sister. She grabbed Dart by the scruff and once again dragged her across the ground. She was stumbling and breathing heavily by the time she reached the cliff. When Twist looked down the small incline, she realized just how painful it looked to fall down.
No.. don't hurt.. Dart.. Twist thought, darkness clouding her vision. She tried to lower Dart down the cliff without hurting her, but exhaustion got the better of her and Dart ended up falling. Twist stumbled down the cliff after her, breathing heavily. The pain of her burn wounds were starting to return to her, so it was a relief to touch the water. The sighed as the cool sensation enveloped her. She started to close her eyes, but the sight of Dart lying only a few feet away stopped her. She inched her way towards Dart, staying half-submerged in the stream. Twist flopped to the ground beside her sister, laying her paw on Dart's.
It was the last thing she did before she let the darkness take her.
