yoongi wanders into the kindergarten after a night of fitful rest. he looks down at his shoes, despondent when the teacher asks him to put his backpack in its locker.

yoongi doesn't say anything the entire morning. hoseok stares at him worriedly from across the room. his own friends have long stopped talking to him since he started spending more time with the older.

hoseok pats his hyung's shoulder tentatively. "yoongi hyung? are you okay?"

the latter says nothing, just gently pulls away from hoseok's hand on his shoulder. hoseok tries not to look hurt. "what happened?"

yoongi abruptly whirls around and glares at his only friend. "it's none of your business." hoseok again tries not to be hurt, instead he gasps. "hyung! what happened to your cheek?!" hoseok's small hands ghost across the older boy's skin.

it's red, left by the palm of a hateful mother. but yoongi doesn't tell him this. instead, he shoves hoseok's hand away a second time.

forcefully, he pushes the younger boy away from him. hoseok lands on the floor with a thump. "i told you, it's none of your business! you're so dumb. can't you see that just because you and your whole world is sunshine and butterflies not everyone else's is."

hoseok fights the tears in his eyes as his friend turns away and storms out into the playground.

yoongi doesn't speak to hoseok for the rest of the day. it's not that he doesn't want to; he does. it's just that he still can't comprehend why his mother had slapped him the night before.

it frustrated him, and explaining it to hoseok was impossible when he himself couldn't figure it out.
