CHAPTER ONE
It was so cramped and dark in the space between the two massive wooden cargo boxes; they were crouched together and couldn’t get any closer to each other. The vicious monsters were going to find them. Torture and kill them. The footsteps that echoed against the walls sounded close. A “I love you” reached her ears. She looked into her mother’s eyes and whispered the words back, so softly that it could not be heard by human ears. She knew those would be the last words that would ever leave her mouth. Her mother squeezed the hand she held in her own and gave a soft smile of reassurance towards Lilly.
The thin piece of metal that was shielding them was suddenly ripped away. She cracked one eye open just in time to see a wooden bat swing down on them. She shouted out, the pain piercing her back, rendering her unable to move. Her mother twisted them so she would take the blows. When her mother’s front came in contact with Lilly’s pierced back the pain increased. Her mother’s body was digging the wood splinters farther into her skin and muscle. Lilly could hear her mother’s shouts and cries of pain. She felt the salty tears running down her face, mixing with her mothers. Why? If there was truly a god out there, why do you do this? What do we have to gain from this torture?! Her mother’s weight had fully come down on her. She prayed that she was unconscious and not dead. Suddenly the weight of her mother was lifted off of her and she was grabbed by her hair roughly. Her scalp was on fire. She felt rough, slimy hands wrap tightly around my neck. “Please, Please, Please.” she pleaded with him. Pleaded with that monster. He laughed and tightened his grip on her neck, almost completely cutting off her air ways. She felt herself slipping into the darkness. The cold, empty darkness that was only filled with dangerous dreams.
Lilly woke with a start; she wiped the sleep from her eyes and tried to calm herself down. The nightmares had become a frequent event for her. Wiping the sweat from her brow and unsticking her shirt from her back she rose from her bed and made her way to her on suite bathroom. Switching on the light, she squinted as her eyes adjusted to the violent change. She looked at herself in the mirror, her eyes were puffy and her hair was a frizzy mess, most likely from constantly tossing and turning. The pads of her fingertips felt the puffiness around her eyes and figured she must have been crying. It didn’t surprise her. Those dreams could make a grown man cry. She sometimes woke up screaming, having to be held, or a better word for it would be restrained, by someone to keep her from hurting herself. Though she never admitted how bad they were to anyone, she believed that they understood how much pain and fear they caused her. After she splashed her face with some cold water and relieved her bladder, she laid back down in bed. Knowing that she wouldn’t be able to sleep anymore, she flipped on the TV that was stationed across the room and watched the cartoons that were only on at an ungodly time in the morning.
Hours had passed and the sun had started to rise, sending in rays of sun light through her open curtains. Barely visible dust particles floated in the air, sparkling as they passed through the golden rays of light. It was almost stunningly beautiful. Such simple a thing could be so beautiful, in an ugly world. Her thoughts were interrupted when there was a knock on her door and her mom poked her head in. “Good morning.” Her mother, Lori greeted as she entered and sat at the foot of the queen size bed. “Morning.” She mumbled back to her mother. Lilly swept the covers off her body and stood and stretched. Her mother took in her appearance, “another rough night?” she guessed, knowing the answer would be yes. She had become accustomed to her daughter having these nightmares but couldn’t find anything to stop them. They had tried everything from prescription medication to herbal teas to drink before she went to sleep. Nothing seemed to help.
