Alex's POV
It wasn't long after the vampire attack and I was now sitting here on a couch in a different room with the others because the other room wasn't safe anymore. They knew we were there so we had to find another room to hide in.

Everyone was still trying to come up with a way to escape but I wasn't listening. I was too absorbed in my own physical pain to focus on what they were saying. My body was sore from hitting the wall earlier when the vampire attacked me. The only person who could see that I was in pain was Tana who had come to sit beside me.

"Hey." She said softly.

For someone so beautiful, she was really shy and sometimes unsure of herself. I make a mental note to tell her that she should never feel that way and that she had nothing to worry about.

I glance at her briefly. "Hi." My voice sounds hoarse, like I've been screaming for hours and no one has heard me.

She bites her lip and pushes her blond hair out of her face. "I can see that you're in pain."

I crossed my arms as I scowl. Of course I can't be mad at her, there's no reason to be. Out of everyone in this horrid place Tana is the one I trust the most. She's the one that I don't feel like I have to be on guard as much around. Lauren was the only one I trusted to begin with, with the exception of Tana. Now that Lauren was gone, I trusted Tana more even if I did vow not to trust anyone.

"Really? No one else noticed." I tell her and I can tell she knows that my animosity is not aimed at her.

Tana smiles and I can see what Lauren had meant when she said that Tana's smile was like a ray of sunshine being shined in your face. Also that it was just as contagious as the chicken pox.

"I miss Lauren." Tana says suddenly.

I stare at her as she starts to fidget with her sleeve cuff, as if she were nervous about what my reaction would be. I give her a small smile. "I miss her too."

As I turn away from her, I can see DeStorm watching us closely, his eyes just slightly narrowed. We make eye contact and his eyes are dark, like really dark and creepy. I don't know why but the look on his face sends a shiver down my spine and I quickly look away from him, unable to keep up the stare contest.

"Our best bet is to play the game." Tyler says, pushing his glasses up on his nose.

I snorted out a laugh and everyone turns to look at me. Tana is the only one with a knowing smile on her face. "Play the game. Are you serious? There can only be one winner, so even if we play the game only one of us is walking out of here alive."

Tyler sputtered and said, "We don't even know if--"

"He's right." Joey said. "Only one of us walks out alive if we play."

"That's better than none of us right?" Gabbie tries, agreeing with Tyler.

Liza shakes her head. "No offense, but that just sounds selfish. We all need to get out of here, not just one of us."

"So what do we do?" Andrea demanded.

"If you can't beat them, join them." Jesse stated.

Everyone voices their confusion and I say, "If we can't beat the game, we have to think like the game. We have to become game."

Jesse clucks his teeth and points at me with a small smirk. "Exactly. Pretty boy said what I was thinking."

I sent him a glare, my reason being the pet name he just called me. I didn't say anything about it though. Allison stood up then and finally spoke.

"It could work." She said. "Even if it doesn't we can always fight."

After agreeing, everyone decided that we should rest up while we can. Tana and I take the couch since it's big enough for two people while the others work out their own arrangement and pretty soon we all fall asleep, with Allison taking first watch.

I woke up some time later from a very vivid dream and found myself sitting up on the couch and looking around the room. It was dark and everyone was still asleep in their respective places. I carded my fingers through my hair, sighing quietly.

I heard voices from outside the room that sounded suspiciously like DeStorm and Jesse and quietly I stood up, making sure I didn't wake any of the others, especially Tana. I made my way to the door and peeked in the hallway just in time to see the two of them turn a corner.

Glancing back at the others lying around sleeping, I opened the door and closed it, creeping down the hallway. Reaching the corner, I looked around it and saw them disappear into a room. I narrowed my eyes.

"What are you guys up to?" I whispered.

I crept to the door and I was lucky that it was cracked open so I could hear what they were saying.

"Are you sure that we're in the clear? He doesn't trust either of us, especially you." Jesse said.

"Of course I'm sure. Everything has been destroyed. No one will ever know, not even him." DeStorm sounded more arrogant than usual and I scoffed quietly.

"Did we really have to kill her though? I mean maybe--"

"She was in the way." DeStorm interrupted. "Do you want him or not?"

"Yeah, of course I do. But--"

"Then you understand why Lauren had to go. She got too close to the truth and she would have told Alex. We couldn't risk it."

I don't know how long my reaction was delayed to what I just heard but a loud gasp escaped my lips and I covered my mouth, my eyes widening.

"What was that?" Jesse demanded.

I slowly backed away from the door and hearing their footsteps coming to the door, I panicked and sprinted down the hallway, heading back to the safe room. Once I was there, I crept back over to the couch and layed down, pulling the blanket back over me and pretended to be asleep.

They couldn't know that I overheard what they said. That I heard everything.

I heard both of them walk into the room and I forced myself to slow my breathing as my heart was pounding against my chest. All of a sudden I felt a hand on my cheek, caressing it and I barely held back a flinch. And then a pair of lips were on my forehead and I fought back a gag.

"Soon." I heard DeStorm whisper.

When I heard them move away from me, I cracked open an eye and glanced around. They were on the other side of the room now, lying on the floor trying to sleep. I tried to go back to sleep but questions continued to run through my head.

What had they meant when they said Lauren had gotten too close to the truth? What truth? What were they hiding? What did Lauren find out that made them kill her? What was it she was going to tell me?

And then the question that I needed answered the most.

What did they want with me?
