Victoria was nice and warm and snuggled down into the warmth. Hearing a chuckle, she jerked, sitting up. Feeling arms wrap around her, she jumped again. She was about to get up out of bed when someone started pounding on Micah's front door.
Micah looked over at his small, young mate. She looked devastatingly beautiful. Her auburn hair sleep tossed, her eyes still glazed from sleep, and her mouth hanging open slightly. Leaning down, because he couldn't help himself, he kissed her before grabbing his robe and going to answer the door.
Victoria cringed when she heard her father's voice. "Where is my daughter? Her cousin told me that you insisted that she was your mate. That can't be possible, Victoria's half-human. She couldn't possibly have a mate. Besides, she's very vulnerable. Today marks the one year anniversary of her fiance's death. She's fragile, Micah. I honestly don't think that she can handle being mated to a wolf. Let alone a ranking, dominant wolf such as you."
"Calm down, David. I'm aware of your daughter's perceived shortcomings. However, I can assure you that Victoria is, indeed, my mate. I realize she's vulnerable. She's very delicate after all. However, I did not know about the fiance. Of course, we haven't had a chance to talk and get to know each other yet." Micah could feel Victoria walk up behind him, her smell calming him after hearing about her "fiance." Waving at her dad, she stepped around him and turning her back on them both, headed to the kitchen.
"Huh, has she always been like that?" Micah quirked an eyebrow with the question.
"Yeah. She's always been just a little too unconcerned about certain things. I'll lay odds that she's in your kitchen fixing coffee. I swear, Micah, that girl would live on that stuff if I let her." Their disagreement forgotten, the men followed Victoria into the kitchen. She was indeed making coffee. She was also in the process on making breakfast. Signing to her dad to sit, she waved her mate over to her and wrapped her arms around his waist and laid her head on his chest. He could swear he heard and felt her purr. After rubbing her face on him, she motioned for him to go sit down.
Sitting at the table Micah looked at his head warrior. "I think it's time that you place a call to Victoria's grandparents. They may understand what just happened." Micah considered the possibility of what was going through his mind, then just as quickly, discarded the idea.
"I think you're right. I'm going to do that now. Bess and Harold, my wife's parents are retired now and actually live close by. Only about an hour's drive away." Getting his phone, he waited for the call to connect. "Hello Harold. How are you? Yes, it's David. Bess doing good, as well? That's great. Listen, I have something to ask you and I'm not really sure how. ...Yes, that's right, she is. As a matter of fact, it appears she has a mate. Not only that, she rubs on him like a cat and seems to purr. Really! Why wasn't I told about this! How could you keep this from me? How could not tell your own daughter! I see. I understand. Ok, Harold. Thank you. No, she's found him. Rather, he found her. Yes, he's a wolf. No, he's a ranking wolf. No, he's not the alpha, he's the beta. Yes, that's right. OK. Thank you for letting me know. OK. Yes, I'll be there next week. OK, bye." David sat back and looked at his Beta and didn't know what to say.
"Well, speak up, man. What did he say. What's going on with my mate?" Just then, Victoria placed a plate of food in front of both men. She had fixed them a feast. There were eggs, hashbrowns, bacon, sausage, sliced melons and tomatoes. Smiling up at her, he focused on his food and ate. Once his plate was cleared away, he looked at his head warrior and waited. The bomb he dropped was not what Micah was expecting.
"She's a cat. A were-leopard, to be exact. Her great-grandparents were pride leaders. Evidently, their daughter, Bess, was born with completely human traits, so she never found a mate. However, she did meet and fall in love with Harold. When Arielle showed no signs of being a were-creature, they figured that the gene didn't pass to her. It would seem that not only did it pass to her, she in turn, passed it to our daughter, Victoria." Micah was stunned. This was not what he was expecting. He didn't know how to react. Victoria, however, seemed ready to take the matter out of his hands. She climbed into his lap facing him and began to rub against him again. Feeling a little like a pervert with her dad in the room, Micah raised her head. She really was purring again.
"Kitten, I think we might want to wait until your father leaves before you start acting like that. He might just take offense at our behavior." Still, he tightened his arms before allowing her to get up and move to her own chair. The little minx was definitely going to keep him on his toes. She was looking at him and rubbing her fingers over the spot where she would carry his mark. Thus, letting him know that she was eager for it. Clearing his throat and then reaching down to adjust himself before standing, he started to speak to David. David however, had other ideas.
"Micah, I'm so sorry about this morning. It's just that I was worried about someone taking advantage of my little girl. I'm ashamed to say that I never considered that you wouldn't do that. Also, weird though it may sound, here's a piece of advice that you might just need. If Victoria is anything like her mom, you're going to have your hands full. These women are very sensual. Victoria's mother was always loving and loved me well, if you understand what I'm trying to tell you." Micah couldn't believe what he was hearing. His father-in-law was telling him that he understood what was going on with his daughter. "You know, she'll probably go into heat any time now. Now that she has her mate close, that is."
Victoria looked up at him from under his lashes as he stood to walk her father to the door. Coming back to the kitchen, he picked up his mate and swung her over his shoulder and carried her to their bedroom. Gently tossing her on their bed, they exchanged heated look. "Oh Kitten. You'll undo me if I'm not careful."
At her confused look, Micah explained. "Sweetheart, the way I feel about you is explainable. The strength of my feelings are incredible. I want to mark you and mate you. With you rubbing contentedly on me and purring wasn't helping, either." At her grin, he suddenly understood. "You little minx. You did that on purpose. You almost caused both of us a great deal of embarrassment. I was ready to mark you in front of your dad. Not a good idea, Kitten."
