Sweaty palms, butterflies in my stomach and a flower in my hand. It's February the 14th, yes, Valentine's Day and I'm just one of those guys who are waiting for his girl ready to give something and profess our undying love and all the cheesy stuff. Yes. I, Kent Jade Rodriguez, will be doing that soon. I don't know, maybe I just feel like it's the last chance to do this. I'm a senior and this would be my last Valentine's with my crush. Let me shed some light to the girl I want to call my Valentine.
Her name is Donna Garcia, a fellow senior. She's been my friend and crush since nursery, we kind of grew up together in the same neighborhood, attended the same school since then. I've always admired her just like a lot of guys. She's just awesome. She's the student council president, captain of the girls' softball team and a top student. Yes, she's my dream girl and let me tell you, she's not one of those who become big-headed when they discover that many adored them. She's still humble and really kind. I love her but I'm too damn scared to tell her all these years.
Now here I am, trying to seep courage out of this famous day for hearts, I'm going to tell her now. I'm standing at the hall way just outside the student council room. They're having a meeting about the activity they organized for the end of the Valentine week. I can here chairs being arranged inside, in a few seconds she's going to step out of that door and I'm going to give these flowers to her, maybe ask her out for dinner. I am going to do that. I will not turn away again. I will...
Damn. As the door knob turned I hurriedly entered the Greek Mythology room just next to the SC room and closed the door behind me.
"Hey, Donna, any plans for tonight?" a girl's voice asked outside.
"Na, I'll stay home with my Mom. It's just an ordinary day for both of us." she replied. She has no plans for tonight, I can ask her out. A little courage came back to me but then,
"Um, Donna? I was thinking... will you go out with me tonight? I... I like you and will you be my Valentine date?" A guy's voice asked. There's no mistaking it, that was Jason Mendez, the vice president and one of the popular guys in school. I want to run out of the door, ask Donna the same question and maybe let her choose. I've got the upper hand, I'm her childhood friend. Maybe if I...
"Uh... sure! I mean, thank you. That's sweet of you." Donna replied.
"Really?! That's great. I'll pick you up at six, is that okay?" Jason replied with an undeniable hint of victory in his voice.
"Okay, see you later." She replied.
"The president and the vice president, awwwww. The hearts are all over today." another girl said and then there were giggles. Then the people outside started walking away and I'm left inside a room filled with artifacts related to Greek history mourning on my own lack of confidence. I want to scream but that would probably bring a group of teachers here. I sighed.
"If only you were not a coward." I muttered. I looked around the room, it's pretty big with desks at the middle and statues, pictures or busts at the sides, mostly of Greek gods and goddesses. I approached a smaller replica of the Venus de Milo. Venus is the Roman name for Aphrodite, goddess of love and beauty.
“If you are real, I just want to tell something. How come you missed me when you showered the blessings of courage for love? Urg, am I really this desperate to start talking to a replica of a world famous statue of Aphrodite?” I muttered to myself. “This is stupid.”
I grabbed my bag from the floor and head out of the room. I threw the flowers in the trash bin just outside. There are only a few students left in the school grounds. The varsity players are in their respective courts practicing and the lyre band members are chilling in the bleachers. I started down the stairs leading to the main doors of the building. I was still really disappointed so I started muttering under my breath.
