It was raining hard outside in Riverdale on a Thursday afternoon. School had just ended and while Betty was awaiting her ride
home, Jughead was waiting for the rain to calm before he could walk home."Hey you." Jughead called. Jughead and Betty have been best friends since they could barely talk. Archie used to hang out with them too but last year when Veronica Lodge moved to town, everything changed. Archie and Veronica fell in love and haven't kept their hands off each other since.
"Hi." Betty smiled as Jughead sat down on the bench next to her.
They spent some time talking about their day and weekend plans - since it was friday tomorrow - and papers that were due. The conversation led to a story Kevin told Betty at lunch.
Kevin Keller always had a positive soul. He always saw the good in everyone and he always seemed happy. Which was a good thing because in a town like Riverdale, not many people are as happy as he is.
"And he said this guy was really hot and really gay." Betty finished quoting Kevin's story about the guy he ran into during his midnight jog in the woods.
Jughead laughed and then paused before speaking again, "Good for him. Everyone deserves someone."
Betty looked at him and narrowed her eyes.
"What you don't think so?" Jughead studies her face.
"I didn't say that. It's just that these days it's hard to find someone and actually stay with them, you know."
"Your parents are still together. They have been since they were our age." Jughead responds.
"Yeah but Jug, you aren't with them at home. You don't see them snap at each other. It's not love."
"I'll tell you what," Jughead shifts so he's facing her directly, "If neither of us are married or in a committed relationship by, say the age of... 30 years old, we marry each other."
"Come again?" Betty chirps.
"Think about it, instead of wasting half of our lives looking for someone to spend it with, we just spend it with each other."
Betty forms a clear V shape with her eye brows not quite understanding what she's hearing. "Give me one good reason why we shouldn't do it, that this is a bad idea." Jughead questions.
"Well, you know... um..." She thinks of a smart ass response, but nothing.
"That's what I thought." Jughead holds out his hand for Betty to shake it.
"Come on, Betts. You know you want to." he teases.
She sighs and rolls her eyes with a grin on her face as she takes his hand and shakes it.
"Deal?"
"Deal."
