She first saw the bracelet in one of her dreams; the thin, pure silver bracelet with 6 diamonds to embellish it. Inside, behind the diamonds, the engraving read, “EL + WS FA “. She had been 9 when she had the dream and, oh, what a lovely dream it had been. The long billowing ball gowns the ladies wore and the handsome men in their black tails. It made the dance floor of half black and white and half Technicolor that flashed before her eyes. The sound of classical music to which the dancers were moving to blocked everything else out, as she was transfixed by the sound and the lovely performers on the ballroom floor. She was merely observing the dance floor, when someone caught her eye. Suddenly, the whole room was now visible and the buzz of the party was noticeable. A hum of chatter charged the air and thunderous laughter was soon heard over the hum. The person that had caught her attention was a young woman in her early twenties by the look of it. The lady shook her dark, wavy brunette hair that fell halfway down her back. Her fair, healthy skin and pale, pink lips glowed as her smile lit up her face as she continued watching the dancers with her sharp, emerald green eyes. The woman wore the most wonderfully beautiful dress the little girl had ever seen. The gown was emerald green to match her eyes and clung tight to her torso while the sleeves hung just low of her shoulders and the skirt filled out just a little bit and tread on the floor just long enough to make her look superior to the rest. She was sitting on a white chair at a white round table, turned to watch the dancers and was watching them so intently as to not listen to what the old man with a gray mustache beside her was saying. The little girl moved closer.
“…sales have gone up this year. Yes, the sales really have sky rocketed, 30% more! Just think! I just couldn’t believe…,” the old man went on. The little girl moved closer to the lady.
Suddenly, a very tall and handsome man about 23 approached the table. He had sparkling, crystal blue eyes that focused on the lady and with his medium sized lips he whispered to the lady “Elizabeth, come with me, I’ve got something for you.” The young man drifted back to another table and started chatting with another older couple whilst he tried to smooth his short dirty blonde hair that was messy in that some hair lay flat while other pieces stuck up.
Elizabeth, suddenly aware of the old man still talking to her, listened to his lecture for a few minutes and when there was a pause, Elizabeth spoke. “I’m really sorry Mr. Townsend, but I have been invited to dance by a nice, young man and I really must accept the offer. I hope you will forgive me. Thank you.” She ambled off towards the man. The little girl walked after the lady, wondering where she’d seen this lady before, for she seemed rather familiar. Elizabeth reached the man and said to the older couple, “Is it alright if I steal William away for a dance?” The couple motioned the, “Okay” and the pair strode to the dance floor. Elizabeth and William danced as the couple and old man watched approvingly as they gossiped with the people around them. Elizabeth whispered in William’s ear, “You have made me quite curious.”
William replied, “You’ll find out soon enough.” Infuriating Elizabeth, she did not like surprises. William gripped her hand tight, pulled her off of the dance floor and led the way at a quick pace.
“Will! Will! William!” Elizabeth giggle-asked, “Where are you taking me?” She smiled questioningly as she was being pulled towards the nearest hallway.
Will tightened his grip a little and looked back at Elizabeth. He then smiled at her, the big, perfect grin that made Elizabeth melt like butter. This silenced her and he led her further away from the party. He then slowed down and pulled her out onto the balcony. The stars were bright and sparkled in the dark black sky and reflected in his clear blue eyes that she so loved. She looked at the lights below. “It’s beautiful,” she said, “Breathtaking.”
