Prologue

The quiet lapping of the gentle waves created a perfect symphony as the incredible heat of the sun pelted down on my skin. Seagulls screeched and the salty breeze of the ocean filled my lungs. I buried my toes into the sand and my fists clenched. The loud shrieking and laughter of children running around made me smile. It made me remember the first time I went to the beach. The waves rushing over my sunburnt body, creating sandcastles and just running for the joy of being alive.

She was there too; she was there with me every step of the way. The way the light cascaded down on her lightly tanned skin and golden-brown hair. She was the definition of beautiful. She never knew how much I loved her, and now she never will.

A single tear fell from my eye; it was painful to remember her at times. But nevertheless, I didn’t want to forget her. I wouldn’t be able to; she was a part of me.

I shut my eyes and let the memories flood through my mind. I didn’t care if I began to cry anymore, it wasn’t anything easy to let go of. Another tear fell, then another and another.

Just let them fall. Don’t hold it in anymore. It’s been too long.

I opened my eyes, my vision blurry and disoriented. Four familiar faces surrounded me, all with sympathetic looks. I could feel an arm wrap around my shoulder and another pull me into a tight hug. I was so grateful to have these people in my life. I loved life, I really did. That was until she left, until all the happiness eventually faded away and a dark cloud blocked out the sunlight leaving my heart shattered and my soul drained.

Why did these things always happen to me?
