Lafayette had always been patriotic, just not necessarily to his country. He sailed to America at the age of 18, to find his place in the new world. It was a strange place, with a strange language and strange customs. The language barrier proved more or less insurmountable in the first year, but as he made new friends, and carved out his place in the Continental Army, English wasn't an issue. He became a general, and one of Washington's small circle of "adopted children". One of his "brothers" was none other than Alexander Hamilton, one of his first American friends. He also became acquainted with none other than John Laurens. As Lafayette became closer to the two, he noticed that they were more than just friends. Although he wasn't sure, his suspicions were confirmed when he was sitting with John, enjoying a peaceful day, when a soldier came and alerted them to the death of Alexander. Lafayette was upset of course, but Laurens was distraught. The general watched as his friend broke over the news. Later that night, as they were sitting around the fire in General Washington's cabin, the door burst open. Standing there, soaked to the bone, was none other than Alexander Hamilton himself. As soon as he could smile, Laurens was there hugging Alex and crying. Lafayette wasn't sure but that night, he heard some questionable noises coming from the tent, but he decided to ignore it. Besides, if his suspicions were correct, he didn't want to walk in there for at least the rest of the night.
