part 2. ( cute. )
THE BUS RIDE to the doctor's office consisted of sumi's small hands wiping her condensing breaths on the bus's windows, having older women gush at her cuteness and taehyung's smiles of pride. he holds her by her small waist, watching as she views the people outside with curious eyes, taking in all she could before her father says a gentle 'down now, sumi,' and takes her hand in his own.
she hops down the bus steps with newfound glee, as her father tries to prevent her from injuring herself. taehyung's grip on the small girl's hand gets a little tighter as they both march into the building, a small family owned clinic, reccomended by jeongguk. if there was anything about his esteemed younger brother, it was that he could notice good quality works - ranging from women to professions - so he decided to give this place a try. not too expensive, either, which was always a plus. it obviously didn't take taehyung long to decide, affordable and efficient? that's not something he'd ever pass up.
the damp air rises a warm hum to his cheeks, and sumi's hand swinging his own back and forth brings him back to reality. a large the kang clinic stood in front of them, and taehyung can practically feel sumi's little brain fill with questions. which is why he isn't surprised when he gets them, the young girl had begun to ramble as soon as his fingers touched the door handle.
"am i getting a shot? i really don't like those daddy. needles are so scary! you don't like needles either, so why would you be taking me to get a shot? that would be mean. are you mean daddy?"
"no, sumi."
"i didn't think so."
"good."
sumi laughs loudly when her father mistakenly pulls instead of pushes the door open, and a pout - followed by a smile - is found on taehyung's face as they both step into the small clinic, met with the comforting smell and aura of the building immediately. a mix of cinnamon and pure warmth. taehyung liked it.
he liked it a lot.
and it seemed as if sumi did too; she saw a small table with coloring books and crayons and almost bursted with excitement. she blinks real fast and begs her father to go over to the table with pleading eyes; the same eyes he has yet to learn how to say no to. he obliges almost immediately, and keeps a close eye on her as he makes his way to the front desk.
when he arrived at the desk, the woman waiting for hin greeted him, before asking for identification and insurance.
"kim sumi...the nine o'clock?" when taehyung nods, she continues, "the doctor will be just a minute. she has no paitients with her as of now, so there shouldn't be much of a wait." she hands taehyung back his identification cards, he thanks her, and is back to watch sumi.
she's still where he left her, playing mindlessly with the crayons, attempting to color between the lines in the book and failing. the television above her faintly plays reruns of a older drama, and taehyung occupies himself with that while they were waiting.
"daddy!" sumi's voice rings through his ears, not exactly startling him, but keeping him aware. "you try now. my fingers are achy." she placed the coloring book in his lap and wiggled her fingers with a pout. she must have been pressing pretty hard.
taehyung smiles at his daughter's antics, and willingly accepts the blue crayon she pressed into his palm. the book in his lap seemed to be jungle themed, and she had already begun to taint the gorilla a royal blue. when he decided it'd be best to finish what she'd started, he heard sumi's name being called.
"kim taehyung and sumi?" an authoritative voice rang out, and taehyung could hear it practically drowning in a busan dialect. when taehyung grips sumi's hand with his own and leads her to where the doctor stood, confusion rips through him harshly, but he wouldn't dare let his mouth utter a questioning word.
this doctor - who seemingly spoke brilliant korean - looked nothing like him. she held deep brown skin, a ponytail of curls, the brightest brown eyes and the warmest smile.
and while sumi returns what she was greeted with, taehyung battles within himself from keeping his eyes wandering for too long. he's surprised, that much is obvious, but that was all. just curious. of how well she spoke his language, and why she chose here of all places to be employed in.
"how are you all doing today?" she asked them, closing the door behind them and leaving after she heard it click. sumi was smiling below him, already back to swinging his arm to and fro. he couldn't tell if she noticed his gaze or not, but if she did it seemed as if she did an amazing job at ignoring it. she was all smiles.
"good!" sumi answered, her eyes twinkling. taehyung quietly says the same, seeing the doctor before him nod and smile again.
"good, good," she walked in front of them a few paces, about to show them to their room when she turns back, "oh! i'm kang kira. sorry i didn't say so before, i'm all over the place this morning. waking up early was never my thing."
now that was something taehyung could relate to. throughout all his years of teaching, he has never chosen to teach a morning class. even with his fear of being late, mornings never functioned in his favor. that could also be a reasonable excuse as to why he was almost late, but he pushes the thought backwards.
"it's alright," taehyung muses, following her lead into their room for the appointment, "early mornings are everyone's hassle, i think."
the room she guided them into was small and plain, two chairs sat on its left side, near a bed, and her computer was near the front. the walls were a bright white, seeming extra light under the room's luminescent lighting. taehyung sat in one of the chairs, easing sumi into his lap.
kira sat down herself, but not before helping herself to the hand sanitizer near the sink. "so, sumi," she smiled charmingly at the young girl, "when's your birthday?"
sumi purses her lips, thinking. "april 12th. yeah. right daddy?" she looked up to see taehyung nodding back to her, and then kira doing the same.
"okay, good. she's had no allergies to any medicines, or anything, mr. kim?" to this he shakes his head no, the only thing sumi has ever been allergic to was peanuts.
taehyung watched her scribble some notes in a notepad; she had surprisingly good handwriting. she looked back up at him, smiling, and asking taehyung if he would set sumi down on the bed for a first inspection.
when taehyung releases sumi, she immediately jumps from the chair and attepmts to climb onto the bed in front of her. to say it wasn't an easy task definitely isn't a lie; but sumi is stubborn, never once asking for assistance while she lugged herself up. when she made a successful landing, an accomplished grin was sent to her father, who just shook his head at her behavior.
kira beamed, laughing as she stood from her chair, "she's so cute," she squeals out, soflty rubbing sumi's arms, then looking into her ears, telling sumi to open wide when she was to look at her tongue. and during this, taehyung watches with a keen eye as any parent should; but his daughter is not the only thing he observes this morning.
his eyes wandered to a ceartain doctor that was charming her way to sumi's smile, her friendly nature giving the small room a warming glow. ms. kiki, she told sumi, is what all the cute kids call me.
at this sumi giggled again, after all her inspections were over, and looked to her father observing the two interacting.
"cute!" sumi recites, her cheeks brewing roses and her hands going near kira's curls; surprisingly they land successfully, "ms. kiki is cute, daddy."
