Am I being born? At least I think I am, since I am no longer in the warm comfort of the very tiny spot that is taken over by my siblings in the stomach of my mother. An un furry hand picks me up gently and places me on a surface that seemed like a counter, but I could not be sure since my eyes would not open. A soft cloth starts rubbing me until I'm completely dry. a I am then placed onto a dirty sandy ground next to my also recently cleaned siblings.
"Well aren't you a little thing! I guess you are the runt of my litter. That's great!" Said my mother as she licks me on the head. A couple of my brothers snicker but I did not see a point of saying anything to them. All I cared for at this moment, was to get the food from my mom and just rest and rest.
****2 weeks later****
Birds chirping, sunlight barely shining, I tried for the seventeenth time in the past four days to open my eyes. I try to lift the eyelids, and suddenly, I knew I have made a success when I see my surroundings that were blurry.
Once my eyes come into a full clear view, I see a room with mint green walls, marble counters, and I could the little puppy paws in the dusty sand pit surrounded by copper fence left by the other Bichon Frises along with me in the pen.
Nudge. Nudge. Nudge. "Hey stop that!" I say as I whip my body around to see what is nudging at me. The nudger turns out to be of my sisters. She looks like she has a few more weeks on me and has yellow tannish curly hair. "Hi late bloomer! Hey don't worry, I was the last one in my litter to open my eyes too! Anyways! You can just call me Big Sis for right now until my owners name me". Big Sis remarks.
I reply faster than a snap, "Wait, do you mean by owner?"
"Oh right! You don't know! An owner is a human who takes you to their home to be a part of their family!"
"That sounds fun! I can't wait!"
" It sure is! One downside is though you don't get to see any of us or this place again."
"Aw! I want to see you again!"
"Hey maybe we will be adopted together!"
"Yeah!"
We both bark in excitement and play chase for the rest of the day even though I never could catch her. We together sleep next to one another and huddled into little balls and let the sleep shut down our hyper bodies.
It was a couple of days later and I was up before Big Sis for the first time. I try to stand up on my still somewhat wobbly legs and I could see that a older woman and man were at the counter with a sign above their heads labeled adoption. Oh how I hope they want two puppies!
"Big sis! Wake up! A couple wants to adopt!" I say very happily. With her eyes still closed, Big Sis says groggily, "Really? Yay! But wait you are not old enough yet to be adopted! But I am! Hopefully one of our other siblings get chosen instead". As soon as she says that, it makes me realize I forgotten I am not old enough and made sure to pray that Big Sis does not get chosen.
The couple comes over and points at her. No, no, no, please don't I say in my head but they do. Big Sis is taken out of the cage. I start to howl at her to give a goodbye, she barks back to say the same thing before she is whisked away from the breeders.
Well, I hope she has a great time wherever she is. But in the mean time, I will sit here waiting for my family to come.
****10 weeks later (Christmas Time)****
THE SAME COUPLE IS BACK.
Please pick me. Come on, you want the only girl right?
They come over, point at me, and nod their heads in agreement to the caretaker lady. The caretaker picks me up, brushes me, cleans me, and puts a red ribbon around my neck with Merry Christmas written all over it. Her soft hands picks me back up and places me in the kinda wrinkly hands of the woman.
She starts walking out of mint green room and as she does this, I take one last look at the recently put up tree, the mint green walls, marble counters, and the pen with my mom, dad, and my two remaining brothers in it, and barked goodbye for the last time.
Big sis, here I come.
