Chapter 1

Its was like a nightmare, something I’ve never encountered. I walked in and instantly went into shock as the judges stood in front of us. scrutinising us on the way we walked, talked and even held out instruments. I couldn’t let it put me off though. I had a goal, and this time I refused to fail!

“And who are you?” Asked Marcus. A tall, spindly man with hair like a birds nest.

“We’re The Blank Canvas.” Lisa squeaked enthusiastically at them.

“Okay, play on.” Marcus wave his hand in our direction and went on to stare at his clipboard.

We rocked our way through Goodnight Sweet Girl  by The Ghost Of The Robot and stood waiting. They looked at Lisa, our lead singer, then myself, the guitarist , then Chris, the drummer. Finally stopping at Jenna, our bassist. Marcus stood up to speak. My heart pounding in my chest, I almost missed his words.

“Try again next year...” I didn’t listen after that. We have been practising for 2 years for this moment and we failed.

We walked back to Chris’ mum’s van for the long drive home. For the entirety of the drive back, all I could think about was what I could do now my only plan had failed. I could try building computers for a living, or become a plumber, roofer, brickie...

The list could go on, but I just didn’t have the emotional drive to go there.

“I’m moving the Leeds next week...” Lisa announced. It was such a random piece of information to blurt out right then, it took us all a few minutes to process.

“So where does that leave the band?” Jenna pleaded, knowing exactly what to expect.

We all just started debating weather or not that band could go on without Lisa, and eventually, we decided, this was the end of The Blank Canvas. I couldn’t believe it, and I didn’t want to, but that was first moment I realised, I wanted to go solo.
