i. the first move.
Detective Knight was falling. He was plunging into the depths of a heavenly trance. Knight was almost entirely engulfed by his utterly cherished sleep when he was awakened by the blaring sound of his assistant, Mark's pager. His conscious instantly knew what that meant - a plausible murder. Groaning, he reluctantly straightened up, longing for sleep. But even in his semi conscious state, he knew duty always came first. Mentally alerting all his senses, the Detective observed Mark nodding repeatedly into the device, taking in details of the event.
"What was that about?" He questioned, once Mark hung up on the call.
"Oh, just the maintenance office. They were reminding us about the plumber that is coming to fix the sink." Mark replied, nonchalantly.
To say that Detective Knight was annoyed, was a slight understatement. Rolling his eyes, he made an effort to fall asleep again, aiming to have a brief power nap to replenish his worn senses. Soon enough, he fell asleep with a relaxed smile on his face. Frequently spending most of his time solving crimes and investigating corpses, Knight surely needed a break. Despite the fact that he was seeking relaxation in his very office.
"Knight, you wake up this instant!" Said too soon, Detective Knight was jerked awake by Mark, who was now giving him a mock glare.
"What is it now?" Detective Knight asks, but he already knew the answer.
"There's been a murder at 7th Elvia Street, block no. 24. "
~
"Looks like someone had a grudge." Staring at the lifeless body at the ground, Detective Knight lets out a low whistle, his eyes skimming from the stab on the woman's stomach to the bloody scratches on her arms and legs.
"This is not the time to crack jokes, Sir." Mark says, although the corner of his lips are turned upwards. Shaking his head, Detective Knight bends down to observe the limp body. His stares at the stab on the lady's stomach and knew it was too deep to have any chances of her surviving.
"The victim's name is Chelsea Francis, 26, works as a chartered accountant at the bank around the corner. She lives alone at street number 5, Green Avenue." Mark reads out from the file. Knight nods, taking in all the information, trying to figure out who would want to target this woman.
"Alright. Get this body sent to the Forensics to Lanie, and ask her to give us any piece of information she finds. Till then, let's inform the victim's family and figure out her recent relations were and who she spoke to in the last few hours."
"Got it." Mark nods diligently and walks away, transporting the body to Lanie, their best forensic scientist. Preparing to leave the murder sight, Knight stands up. But something shining under the sunlight catches his eyes. He picks up the chess piece and immediately recognises it. A knight.
~
"Hey, Knight. Lanie's got some news for us." Mark says.
After informing Chelsea's family and comforting them about her surprising death, Detective Knight was in pure concentration. Trying to connect the possible suspects and the time of her death. He snaps out of his trance and immediately gets up to greet Lanie and acquire some clues. He knew Lanie's capabilities.
"So, what have you got for us?" He asks, once they reach the morgue.
"Well, as you might have noticed, the victim has been stabbed too deep. I'm saying, probably using an extremely sharp knife, sort of like a kitchen knife. Apart from that, I know that before the murder, she was tied with ropes which indicate the bruises and scratches on her bare legs and arms. The time of death was around 2:00 to 4:00am" She says, pointing along the injuries.
"And, I found something that you might find interesting." She gently turns the body's arms and a fresh scab comes into view. Detective Knight and Detective Mark lean in, and stare in shock. They bend further, trying to observe the wound. The wound appears like handwriting, carved using a sharp knife. It reads, 'B2' in scrawny and untidy font.
"That would explain the 'B2' carved on her hand. Those places along with the knight, indicate the chess moves on the board."
"Looks like our killer is leaving us a clue."
