We were driving to the sea in an attempt to leave before the whole law changed. As we inched closer and closer, we saw the guards. Great. They'd be checking passports. "Maybe we could just drive the car into the water. Swim for it" I try to suggest any option to avoid being sent back.

"Luke. It's too dangerous. Your binder would weigh you down. We wouldn't make it. Let's just turn back. We still can. I'll hide the passports. Well sort a new one for you... they won't know you're trans*..." God I hated that word. It made us not seem human now. They outlawed it a few days ago. Many of us fled to other countries, mainly Drebchek-which I'd been told had been named Canada before- or tried over the waters by boat to Grehen (Britain).

"I'd rather die free and human than dehumanised and humiliated." I snap. He glares at me "fine. Well go back. If the passport doesn't work then I'm swimming for it." I faced death or life imprisonment for who I was. How was this fair on any of us? Half of the population of Frahden were trans! They were willing to loose almost 20 thousand people rather than stand up against the regime. I hated this. I hated having this huge secret, any chance of escape-even in death- was better than being hunted and living in fear you'd be found out...
