TRANSLATIONS AT THE END
"Papa?"
Mae tiptoed down the stairs quietly, gingerly whispering her father's name. She didn't know if he was here or not; she was more worried about his friends being here. They never did anything to her. They were loud, though. Crude and loud, shouting rude things at her.
Mae wasn't stupid. She knew they all wanted her. She knew her body was young, something they hadn't had in a long time. But she was saving herself, and she knew they wouldn't touch her. Her father forbade it, and since he was the one with the money, they listened to him.
"Mae?" His voice came from the dining room. She spun around and saw him leaning in the doorframe. Her gaze wandered down to the glass of whiskey in his hand. She gulped.
"Mae, I want to talk to you. My friends are coming round later, and we're going out. I want you to come with us."
"Where, papa?" She was afraid of him when he'd been drinking. He got stupid ideas like this, ideas that usually ended up with her being hurt. The only time he didn't protect her was when he'd been drinking - which, she hated to admit, was becoming more and more frequent.
"To the club. The new one that has opened downtown," he suddenly put the glass down on a nearby table and stood close to Mae, stroking her face. She stood frozen, afraid to move. "I bought you a dress, my darling. Make sure you wear it."
She knew the kind of dress he would have bought her. A slutty one. One that she especially didn't want to wear to a club.
"Papa, I already have the perfect dress for this occasion. I don't need a new one, I want to surprise you," she tried desperately to talk him out of making her wear that dress. Mae knew that if she came down wearing something he didn't like, he wouldn't hit her. Not in front of his friends, anyway.
"Hmm, perhaps. Make sure you look good." His grip on her face suddenly became tight, painful even. "You will come with us though, like it or not." Suddenly an idea came to Mae's mind.
"Can I bring a friend, papa?" She would invite the sexiest person she could think of. That way, the attention of both her papa and his men would be off her, and onto someone else. Who they couldn't do anything to.
He nodded sharply. "Don't invite anyone stupid." He left, picking up his whiskey on the way.
Mae stumbled up the stairs to her room, grabbing her phone and opening it.
"Think, Mae, think!" Who could she invite? She didn't really have any friends, she didn't want anyone to be involved in her papa's world of drinking and gambling and danger. She sure as hell didn't want anyone to see the way she lived in fear.
"Hailey!" She closed her eyes in relief. The crazy brunette from her old school was a party animal and all round slut. She was a nice girl, although had no idea when to keep her mouth shut, or her hands to herself. Mae knew that she would never say no to a party though, especially at a club.
She held her phone up to her ear shakily as it rang.
"Hiya, it's Hailey here!" The chirpy voice of Hailey rang through the phone and Mae forced herself to smile, imagining that might make her sound better.
"Hey, Hailey, my dad is said he could get me and a friend free into that new club downtown. Wanna come?" Hailey squealed.
"Oh my gosh, totally? I sooo want to come, thanks for inviting me! You're a total babe, I hear all the guys in there are smoking! Why are you inviting me anyway?"
"Oh," Mae fake giggled, "I just don't know anyone that appreciates a party more than you. Wear something sexy and be here in a half hour, ok?" Hailey agreed and hung up.
