Jay looked up at the stranger. She was pale and skinny with crystal blue eyes. Her hair was divided in two. Half of it was black and the other half was white. Sitting on top of it was a striped black and white bow. She wore a white shirt, a black skirt with straps, white ankle boots and a black scarf.
Am I the only one who thinks that's weird? Anyway, back to the story.
"Um...no...?" He replied.
"C-Can I sit here?" She asked.
He raised an eyebrow. "I don't know, can you?"
She tilted her head slightly to the side with a confused look on her face. She gave off a subtle doll-like vibe..
Okay....he thought. So sarcasm isn't working... time for plan B...
"Why can't you just sit somewhere else?" He asked, taking a bite of his apple.
"I'm afraid I can't do that, you see..." She said meekly. Then she whispered. "Normal people scare me..."
Jay almost choked on the apple. He looked at her. She looked truly scared.
"Quite horrifying things, normals."
He looked her up and down and sighed.
Of course she was insane. Why wouldn't she be? She looked like a human zebra. Jay got up and picked up his lunch tray.
"Where are you going?" She asked. He remained silent and kept walking. No way was he gonna get caught sitting and/or talking to Miss Black and White over there. He looked back at her and he realized that she was eating alone. He sighed. He almost felt bad for her. But he kept walking. He went to his next class and sat down. Never mind that the class was completely empty. If there was anything he needed right now, it was his personal space. He wanted to be alone. Then he zoned out, remembering his time in prison, and how he would rather be back there than in this fucked up place. Then he thought about his family...his parents..they were never there for him...they didn't even bother to visit him when he was in prison. Not once. The only one who visited him was Aunt Linda. She was the only one who truly understood him. He should probably go visit her soon. Yeah, today after school, he would go see his Godmother. She'll be so happy and-"Why are you always alone?"
He jolted out of his thoughts. The classroom was still empty. Well, except for the zebra-girl sitting beside him, staring at him curiously.
"What?" He asked.
"Why are you always alone?" She repeated meekly.
"Look, doll. I don't know who the fuck you are, quit playing games with me." He replied aggressively. Again, she tilted her head in confusion.
"But there aren't any games to play. And who said anything about games? I just want to know why you're alone all the time." She said innocently. He groaned in frustration. What's with this girl? He opened his mouth to reply but he was cut off by the sound of the bell and the teacher walking in with the rest of the students.Throughout the class, he kept glancing at her. Everything was strange about her. She sat with her legs crossed, yoga style. How does one even manage that position on a chair? She listened carefully and took down notes. She checked her wristwatch too many times. He sighed. This was all stupid. He really didn't give a damn about her.
Finally, the closing bell rang and she was out of there faster than anything. Jay shrugged it off and focused on going home and getting ready for his visit to Aunt Linda. When he got home, he shaved, showered, had a fresh change of clothes and walked out. He didn't miss the note on the kitchen counter either. Apparently his parents won't be back for another month because as always.."Something came up"...but he wasn't going to let that ruin his mood, no way. Not when he was going to see the one person that actually meant something to him...
"Robert, Aunt Linda's please..." He told the aging driver as he got into the car. He couldn't stop smiling. He bought a box of chocolates and a bouquet of lillies, her favorite. Finally the limo pulled up in front of a house in the outskirts of town. Jay got out of the car and took a deep breath. This was the only place that felt like home. Aunt Linda never liked living big, nevermind the fact that she was as loaded as Jay's family, if not more. He grabbed his gifts, walked up the porch steps and rang the doorbell. He heard footsteps and soon the door opened to reveal that face he knew and loved."Well I'll be damned, it's Jay!" She yelled in excitement before pulling him into a big busty hug. "You're back! I'm so happy to see you." She exclaimed. Jay smiled. She still had that thick country accent.
"How are you Aunt Linda?" He asked. Although he didn't need to. He could see it for himself. For a woman in her sixties, she was doing fantastic. Now I know you guys are wondering why Jay loves this woman more than his own mother. Well you see, back when he was in juvenile, she did her best to visit him as much as she could, her house was quite a distance from the prison but she still visited at least three times a month. Although during his last two months, she didn't visit. He came to know that she was terribly ill."I'm great, son. Even better now that you're here." She replied. "Take a seat, and I'll get you some lemonade."
He sat down. He had craved Aunt Linda's lemonade for a long time now. She would often bring some along during her visits. But he could never get enough of it. She came out with a jug filled with lemonade and a glass. He poured himself a generous amount and sipped gently, savouring every taste.
"So how's your health? I heard you were sick." He asked.
"Oh I'm doin' just fine, son. I've been following doctor's orders and Lola's been a really great help."
"Who's Lola?" He asked.
"Oh, she lives across the street, but she would always come and take over every duty in the shop. And if that wasn't enough, she comes home to help out with the chores as well." She explained.
"I see, I didn't know the Walkers had a daughter." He said.
"They don't. She an orphan, you see, they adopted her six months ago. But the damn rugrats don't give her the time of day. But she's been comin' everyday since she moved in. Bless her heart. I've got half the mind to adopt her m'self. But the paperwork all adds up to nothin'. But that ain't gonna stop me from doin' everything I can for that girl. She's a damn angel." Suddenly, she had a spark in her eyes. Jay recognized that spark. It only happened when she was up to something...
"Jay, do you have a girlfriend?" She asked, smirking.
"Um...no..." He replied.
"Perfect. Lola dear, please be a darlin' and come up here. There's someone I need to introduce you to."
"Okay, ma'am. I'll be right there." A tiny voice came from the kitchen. A tiny voice that was so... familiar. He was still trying to remember when she walked out.
"Miss Linda, I'm not quite done-" She stopped in her tracks. Jay widened his eyes. You've gotta be fucking kidding me. She looked like a mess, her white shirts was stained and her black and white hair was ruffled and the striped bow was almost undone. The zebra-girl... damnit.
"Jay, this is Lola. Lola, this is Jay, my godson." Linda said. Jay internally prayed that Lola wouldn't give away the fact that they had met. He gazed at her face, she was smiling. Damn bitch. She was enjoying this.
"Hi, I'm Lola, Lola Rae." She said, extending her hand. He shook it...
"I'm Jay." He said.
"Well, aren't you two as cute as a damn kitten." Aunt Linda said. "Tell you what, you two should hang out sometime."Are you serious?
Was Aunt Linda really trying to set him up with the doll? He had to say something.
"That's... great, Aunt Linda, but.... I'm very...busy, you know, school and.."
"Bullshit." She cut him off. "She's a gorgeous little thing. Really cheerful too. A real bundle o' joy. How about tomorrow after school? She could come over."
"But I don't think she wants-"
"Nonsense. Lola would like to hang out with you, right Lola?"Please say no, please say no, Please say no...
"I would love to, Miss Linda." Lola replied, smiling brightly. What was she so happy about?
"It's settled then, tomorrow after school, you go home with Jay, Lola." Linda said.
What the fuck just happened?
