The family had everything they needed.
The father's shift was dependant on his contract. Sometimes he would have to work for days or weeks, but the children were overjoyed to see him when he returned from work. Of course, don't forget the wife who loved her husband unconditionally, just like her children.
It was that, one day where it all went wrong. That silent knock. Those sobs that made Jessica come out of her room to see what was wrong.
That quite feeling in the air, when Jessica heard the news, as if time itself had stopped. Jessica had no idea how to react. Of course, she did the one thing that every 6 year old does or is supposed to do. She broke down and cried.* * * *
Ashley searched through the drawer rapidly, trying to find the house's papers. She knew Jeff had put them somewhere here. She needed to show them to the women waiting outside, demanding to see the papers. This particular women, Mrs. Crosby, was determined to remove the only acclaimed property from the land she was about to buy.
Unfortunately for her, the house was fully legal. It had been made in 1985 by Jeff Harlow, under legal circumstances.
Mrs. Crosby wanted to build a full theme park for disabled kids but of course, the small house was interrupting.
Ashley finally found the papers, not in the best condition. The file looked old, which it was, the type they don't make anymore. The papers were ruffled and dusty but Ashley only took a split second in rearranging them and confidently walked out of the room towards the living room.
Mrs. Crosby, sitting one-leg-over style, patiently waited for Ashley, smirking to herself. It's taking long enough. She probably can't find it. She thought to herself. That smirk vanished when Ashley walked in with a battered file in her hand.
Mrs. Crosby signaled Ashley to hand it over to the man sitting next to her. This suit wore glass spectacles and polished them with his handkerchief before opening the file.
The lawyer took a quick look and leaned over to Mrs. Crosby whispering something like "It's legit" in her ear. Mrs. Crosby just frowned then shot daggers towards the file.
She got up from the couch and cleared her throat.
"Fine. You win. Just so you know Mrs. Harlow, you just sent our years of sweat and blood down the drain." She motioned her hands along with every word she said. She looked at her lawyer, who was apologetically looking down at the wooden floor. He looked up when she began to speak.
"Since when did making unhappy kids happy become a wrong thing?" She stared out the window absent-mindedly, as if she was really having a vision. "This..." she held out her hands praise-style towards the grassy platform surrounding the house, "was perfect." She dropped her hands to her sides and picked up her purse from the coffee table.
"Nevertheless, we're going to have to look for something else." She held out her nail-painted hand towards Ashley, who collided it with her pale hand.
"I wish you the best of luck, Mrs. Crosby." The first words Ashley spoke since Mrs. Crosby's rambling about her crushed dreams.
Mrs. Crosby turned on her heels and walked out the door, her lawyer following.
Just as Mrs. Crosby got in her black, shiny Cultus, a school bus halted in front of the Harlow house with a loud screech due to the brakes being slammed.
Jessica Harlow jumped off the bus with her green bag on her back and waved to the two girls waving at her from the bus window. She picked up her pace towards the house as the wind whipped back her light brown hair and the sun made her incredible blue eyes squint.
She ignored the Cultus as the engine revved, hoping it was the last time she would see it.
"Hey Jess." Her mom hugged her and kissed her forehead as soon as she walked in. "How was school today?"
"Good. In fact, it was great. We had a surprise maths test in the first period which I knew well, lunch was burger and fries, and the principal is replacing almost all of the books in the library."
Ashley took Jessica's bag off her shoulders and placed it on the table. "Wow, sweetie that's great." She smiled while pouring some warm milk in a glass.
Jessica looked up at her mother. For a 10 year old, she was very observant. She looked at Ashley's blond hair, tied back in a ponytail, embracing her pale but beautiful features. The dark bags under her brown eyes stood out apart from her chapped lips. Jessica internally sighed. She wanted to see her mother without the tiresome looks which Ashley tried to hide but failed miserably. She just wished she could help. I will help her, Jessica thought. Right after final exams are over.
"Where's Jazzy?" Jessica leaned in the kitchen.
Ashley took the plate of milk and cookies out towards the table. "She's inside, sleeping."
Jessica took a seat on the table. Their kitchen was too small to place the round table in there. There was no oven or microwave, just the stove. The house had two rooms, one slightly bigger than the other. The slightly bigger room was occupied by Ashley and Jasmine, Jessica' s 5-year old sister while the other belonged to Jessica and Jr, her 6-year old kid brother. They barely remembered their father as they both were very young so they moved on quicker.
Jessica finished her snack and took her bag in her room.
"Are you going to take a nap?" Ashley asked, putting the empty plate and glass in the sink.
"No, I have some science homework which will take time." She went inside her room and arranged her books on the table. As she closed the door, another school bus was heard outside the house, and she heard Jr yelling. She sighed. Jr always messed up things and made it hard for her to study.
She held out her pencil with her left hand and began to scribble 5th grade homework.* * * *
A\N: I know the story maybe boring to some people but it gets better later. However, this is not PG-13 so everyone can read this. I am a huge fan of J.K Rowling and I want to write for once, a detailed story and this plot was perfect. I completely made this up, didn't copy the idea, however if this idea does sound familiar then that is a coincidence, I swear. Good luck my few readers, and if you liked this chapter, be sure to vote. Thank you!
