-for Ash-
Seth felt the shock of waking up hit him like thunder shocks still air. All was dark. He sat in the stillness and breathed a deep sigh. The breath caught in his throat and was dragged out again. The gentle pressure of the sheets poured over his skin with the rising of his chest. The room was plain and dark. And there was another pressure. Like smoke in a clouded sky, it was a blurred sensation, yet it was definite. In the darkness he saw past the grey thing. But he knew it was there. It sat there weightily, its grotesque form gently pulling in and soaking out the dry air. Foggy eyes like those of a great toad peered out from its sunken head. Seth sat in bed and felt the eyes. He felt their presence and their gaze pushed into his chest. His breath drew shallow. The clock beside him clicked away meaningless seconds in the timeless dark. He sat stilled by the gaping grayness. The thing opened a maw filled with dozens, perhaps hundreds, of minuscule teeth. Like pinpricks they started upon Seth. He felt them creep slowly across his body. First his foot began to tingle. An instinctual twitch rid him off the sensation for a moment, but in a moment it was renewed, each prick a gentle dread. With another tick of the unseeing clock, a pin struck into his leg. The thing's mirthless grin made new rolls on its bloated face. Seth's blood retreated from his face, leaving it a pallid white seen by none, like a mushroom deep within solemn caves. From the the corners of the room , shadows were dark like smoke. Seth's jaw tightened as he searched the dark for the thing. He knew its unwanted form well, every loathsome curve found its way into his head and rubbed its flabby form against his skull. A gentle wave of mucus lapped against his mind. It pulled him deeper. Like gentle rains that become a downpour, it became heavy. The dark oppressed his form and the teeth crawled up his face and into his mouth. He became dimly aware of a distant flick. An air conditioner sighed cool air, and the moment swept the horrors with a gentle wind. Tender waves brushed Seth's skin and sweet relief breathed into him. The shadows fell, and like grey curtains over the night, his eyelids come together. He returns to sleep. And his sleep is dreamless. From a dark corner, it watches.
