Chapter 1

I walked to the big mansion I lived in with my parents and their friends. I had just gotten off school and- oh. My phone buzzed. I pulled my phone out and opened a text from my best friend Nick. He was the shy, awkward kid at school, but I saw a great person behind that. We've known each other for less than a year, but we were great friends almost immediately.

hey Brook. what's up???

The sky

No dip sherlock

Lol. I'm just at the gate
Just got home

Think I can come over?

Maybe. I'll have to ask
my parents my dad might
flip but oh well

I put my phone back in my pocket and punched in the gate code. The gate opened and then closed behind me. I walked inside and yelled "I'm home!"

"Hey Brook. How was your day?" Elton, one of my parent's friends asked from the game room.

"Hey Elton. My day was pretty average. Where's Andy?" I asked. Andy was Elton and Amanda's son. He was 10.

"He and Amanda are at the store." Elton replied.

"How have you been lately? Still sad about Circa?" I asked.

"Yeah... I miss her a lot." Elton answered sadly. Circa had just died a week and a half ago. The whole house was sad, but Elton was the worst of all of us.

"Where's everyone else?" I asked.

"I don't know. I think Sam is upstairs with Angel." Elton said.

I ran upstairs quietly to surprise my godparents. They were also like my aunt and uncle, but so was everyone else I lived with. I dropped my backpack outside my room and tiptoed towards Sam's door.

I quickly opened it and jumped onto Sam's back. He was standing right by his bed which was perfect. He grabbed my arms and pulled me off onto his bed. We were both laughing.

"Where's Angel?" I asked.

"She's with Amanda and Andy."

"And my parents?"

"Exploring for a video." Sam explained.

"Of course. Can Nick come over?" I asked.

"Oh, who's Nick?" Sam teased.

I stood up and punched his shoulder. "You know Nick, Sam. Don't play dumb."

"I'm just kidding. And yes, he can come over."
