A/N: My first fan fiction! I'm so excited! I LOVE Ranger's Apprentice! It took me one month to read the entire series, but it sadly ended at book 12 (super duper sad face) I'll start reading John Flannagen's other series soon. In the mean time, I have resorted to reading fanfictions of Ranger's apprentice. Now, I will write my own! Enjoy!
Disclaimer! I do not own Ranger's Apprentice! I own nearly nothing in this story including characters, setting, etc.
Prologue
Will couldn't stand his master and he hated him all the more for sending him on this ridiculous mission.
This was more of a punishment than anything else. Anybody in corps could have easily done it. When he was ordered to take on the mission, he had been infuriated. He knew that he was perhaps one of the best criminals in the corps and felt that his talents would be wasted on this mission.
"Your head is getting too big." His master had told him as he basically kicked him out of his own house. "Perhaps this will teach you a bit of humility."
Now, here he was, sitting at the top of a tree, half asleep. A fiery red, orange, and yellow cloak was wrapped around him so that he could blend in with the autumn leaves of the forest.
"Who is this 'Halt' anyway." He muttered to himself grumpily.
He took out a crumbled piece of paper from his pocket.
Halt... Occupation: Ranger, Age: unknown, Residence: Redmont fief, blah, blah, blah...
He scanned over his target's profile with a bored expression. Something caught his eyes.
He's sensitive about his age and height and is easily insulted. Hm... maybe this will be fun after all... Will cackled to himself maniacally.

Halt rarely failed any of his missions, but when he did, he would not be a happy man.
Today was one of those few days that he failed.
Three months. That's how long he had been traveling for this failed mission. Crowley, the Ranger Commandant himself, had given him the job.
The mission was simple. He was to capture a mysterious and young rebel who was rumored to be a part of the famed Criminals' Corps. Apparently, the boy had been causing trouble down south. He had expected it to be a quick and simple mission.
However, by the time he reached Southstar Fief, the place where his target was last seen, the criminal was long gone. He kept following him, but the rebel always seemed to be two steps ahead. Eventually, Halt had given up and decided to return home.
Now, with a thunderous expression that discouraged anybody to approach him, the Ranger stormed down the dirt road that would lead him back to his little cabin in the woods.
As he neared his destination his eyes spotted something above his cabin. There, at the top of the oak tree that swayed above his home, a small figure was resting. He grinned.
Maybe he hadn't failed just yet.

Will woke up with a startled yelp when the alarm nearly destroyed his eardrums. At first, he felt annoyed and confused. Why was a mental alarm spell going off in his head? Then he remembered the mission and his eyes flew wide open. The alarm spell was designed to detect any enemies who were aware of his presence and warn him. He had been discovered.
With out moving, he looked for his spotter from the corner of his eyes. There was a cloaked man approaching the cabin. It was the Ranger, it had to be! But, why wasn't he attacking? Why wasn't he telling him to reveal himself? Will watched his target cautiously.
Halt didn't stop to look at him. He was acting as if he wasn't there! Will kept waiting for the Ranger to call him out until Halt unlocked the cabin's door and slammed it shut. Will then understood. The Ranger was silently challenging him, daring him to attack him. Will scowled. How dare the man mock him like that! He was going to answer this challenge, and he knew just what his answer was.
Halt sighed and leaned back on his comfy chair. Come in here boy. He thought to himself. I dare you.
