Water

   "In war, water is everywhere. In war, water is also a weapon. In war, water can drown you. It can drown you."

   It had been weeks since I met Tommy.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

        I circled around the beach, waiting for Tommy to get back. I spotted something in the corner of my eye. A man was burying his deceased friend. My heart swelled with sympathy, and I made my way over to the man, going down on my knees and helping him cover up his friend. His eyes met mine. I stared back at him with the same sense of confusion. He looked back down, continuing to cover his friend.

     "Thank you." The man had a heavy accent.

    "Everyone deserves to Rest In Peace." I replied. He smiled at me, and I sent him a small smile back. I heard something thump down next to me, and I looked up at it, my face brightening.

"Tommy!" I exclaimed. He smiled, ruffling my hair, and looking at the other soldier who was still busy burying his friend.

"Thanks for watching her." He said. I puffed out my cheeks.

"I don't need to be watched!" I huffed. Tommy chuckled.

"Yeah you do." He said. He helped the soldier finish burying his friend, then Tommy and I stood, walking towards the group of lined up soldiers who were ready for a boat out. I scanned my eyes over them, catching some disapproving glances. I stuck around Tommy, taking a deep breath. We kept walking towards a larger group of soldiers, hearing shouts near us. I looked up, watching groups of men run by holding people on stretchers. I bit my lip. We both stood still in the middle of the beach, looking around at all the neatly ordered soldiers. In lines, in groups. A loud sound came from above us, and many soldiers took out their guns. I started to follow everyone's gaze, until Tommy grabbed me and pushed me to the ground, covering my head. Panic rose in me. Another air attack. Tommy fell next to me, covering his head as well. Everyone was shooting, everyone was running. Then, in one brilliant moment, everyone hit the floor. I shut my eyes tightly, hearing many small explosions. They came closer. Closer. Closer. BAM!

I screamed. Sand rained down on my head from the impact of the explosion. My body shook in fear. Then it was quiet. I scrambled to my feet, Tommy standing up right after me . He grabbed my face, studying me.

"Are you alright?" He asked. I nodded, haphazardly slapping his hands away. We looked around at the hundreds of dead soldiers that now dotted the beach of Dunkirk. Everyone got back in lines. It was silent, until one soldier spun around, fury in his eyes.

"WHERE'S THE BLOODY AIR FORCE?!?" He shouted. I flinched at his tone, yet I was wondering the same thing. Everyone grouped back up. Tommy lightly whacked my arm.

"Cmon. Let's go help carry someone." He said. I nodded in approval.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
      Tommy, the soldier who was burying his friend and I were running down the beach, holding a wounded man. My breath came out in short spurts, my head fixed on helping the man in the stretcher. The ship honked, signaling that they were leaving soon. I let go of the middle part of the stretcher, running to the front in front of Tommy.
