We both laughed, for a Nurse she had quite a dark sense of humour; that was probably the reason why we seemed to get along so well.
After she patched me up I realised that I was late for my home room. Shit, you have Math class and you're almost an hour late to an hour and a half long class.
We exited her office, but before we headed back out into the cold I looked over at Nathanial, "hey," I tugged again on his sleeve, "what class do you have as of now?"
"Mr. Fields is my home room".
"Perfect," Mr. Fields is going to kill you
We made our way back across the land of Ice and snow without a hitch. This time was different as I was actually able to keep warm under the huge black coat that I still had draped over me. I led Nathanial to the class and we stepped in quietly, hoping to not disrupt the ongoing classroom.
Our teacher looked over at us from the board he was writing equations on with an amused expression, "ahh Milo, I see you've finally made it to class, and with a new face none the less," he turned and so did the 20 students in the room, "what if your name, new purveyor of all things math related".
Yeah. Mr. Fields was weird like that.
Unfazed, Nathanial looked at him and simply stated, "Nathanial". To be honest, I can't say that I expected anything other that that, Mr. Fields on the other hand urged him to go on and say something about himself to the class. Nathanial then looked across the classroom at all of the bored students and spoke tactfully, "I am 17 years of age. I find the colour red to be adequate. Where do I sit?"
The teacher laughed, "Nicely put Nathanial, and you can sit next to Milo since you already seem to be acquainted. Now hurry along so I can resume the lesson please,"
I took his large hand in mine and led him to the table that I sat at. I was normally without a partner in this class, well all my classes to be honest, and we sat at the table as the teacher began writing strange symbols on his whiteboard. I hurriedly unpacked my binder and pencils, and I sat quietly.
The teacher then began excitingly explaining equations to us as the staring faces of students began to lose interest in the odd looking pair that had interrupted the class. I turned to Nathanial and whispered, knowing that the teacher was far too excited about his maths to notice, "Don't worry about that, Mr. Fields does that to all new students," I smiled, "When he asked me, I was so nervous I said something along the lines of 'HeyMyNamesMiloAndIDontLikeThis' all in one breath and then walked over to this very table".
Again, he didn't show any emotion on his face, "That sounds mediocre at best"
I laughed a bit, "yeah, it was really bad, but then I made tons of new friends and we braided hair and sang Kumbya.""Where are these friends?" He questioned.
"That's the part of the story that's actually not true, I ended up staying at this table by myself the entire time and not talking to anyone in this class in fear that they might kill me on site"
"Okay". He said, and took out a red notebook out of his grey bag. I took in the view of his organised and filed schoolbag. Everything had it's place and things were sorted by date, size, and class. It was a far cry from my bag that was the equivalent of a store after a large sale: messy, broken, and full of regret.
He looked on at the teacher who was frantically pointing at triangles and graphs, and his green eyes were like sponges that soaked up every word he spoke. I watched him take notes, and his sloppy handwriting surprised me; I expected the opposite: neat penmanship porn that everyone lusts for. It contrasted his organisation and very character so deeply I looked back into those green eyes.
"He was hiding something"
