Eject

Brendon says goodbye before he leaves, and you say it back. When the door closes behind him, you pick up the remote and hug your knees towards your chest. You try to ignore the tears pooling in your eyes, but they blur your vision. You blink. Now that Brendon's gone, you have the remote to yourself, and wet patches on your knees.

When Brendon reaches the parking lot, he gets in his car and puts his key in the ignition. He doesn't drive. Instead, he finds him self pulling out the key, locking the car and walking back into he building, back to the person he's always loved.

A phone vibrates on the counter. You recognise it as his. You stand up to see who's calling. Her name lights up the screen.

The doorbell rings. You pick up the phone and open the door to see Brendon, panting slightly. He opens his mouth, but you cut him off. "I know. You left this." You hand the phone to him, still vibrating, and he sees the name of the caller.

"You should take that," you say, trying not to let any hint of emotion into your voice. Only when the door is closed again do you realise that the tears never stopped spilling out of your eyes.

Brendon stands there, outside the door, for five minutes, ten, fifteen. Multiple times his finger touches the doorbell button, but he never presses down. All the while you're sitting on the sofa, wishing he would burst back in and tell you he wasn't leaving.

Eventually, Brendon leaves the building. When he reaches the parking lot, he lights the ignition in his car, and this time, he drives.
