merlin was terrified to go to arthur's chambers.

the prince had granted him a week of recovery, and despite that, merlin still was uncertain. the lashes on his back had closed up and healed, and the burns on his legs had begun to stop festering. his arms and legs were still hairless from being singed off- he'd have to be cautious about that.

everything was healing, except for the trauma in his mind. arthur was the equivalent to a bounty hunter in merlin's mind now, and it was going to be a long road before merlin could convince himself otherwise.

his hands were shaking like no tomorrow as he pushed open the door as silently as he could.

and there, his eyes landed on the prince, sleeping soundly.

the prince that wanted him dead was ten feet away.

merlin swallowed as his throat constricted. he wasn't sure he could handle being in arthur's presence for long. he shut the door quietly, never taking his wide and petrified eyes off arthur because he knew, he knew about merlin's magic and he wanted to light him up like a great big human torch.

he was so paranoid.

merlin moved to the curtains, his heart pounding heavily in his chest. arthur looked peaceful, he looked harmless when he was asleep. he was far from it. merlin sucked in a breath, drawing back the curtains to bathe the prince in golden light.

“r-rise and shine.”

he stuttered slightly as he slowly turned around to look at arthur. the blonde stirred, and before long, his blue eyes opened and focused on his manservant. he smiled.

“it's good to have you back, merlin. how are you feeling?”

merlin froze up. the prince was smiling at a sorcerer. he had no idea. but, oh, if he did, merlin would be damned.

it's good to have you back.

like you know.

merlin wanted to flee, but a small part of him was fighting to get out and yell at the prince for being so damn stupid.

how are you feeling?

how do you think?

arthur was frowning now, because he had asked merlin a question and there was yet to be an answer. he was just standing there, staring at him like a deer caught in a hunt. arthur sat up, pushing the blankets aside, and looked at his friend. merlin, just standing there, staring blankly.
