Blinding lights were all she saw as the car she was driving rolled down the road. She then felt excruciating pokes in her eyes and slowly lost consciousness as her whole world turned dark.
Beep...Beep...Beep
She heard the heart monitor, signaling that she was still alive. She slowly opened her eyes and was greeted with darkness. A woman shrieked and ran towards her, "Miss! Are you ok?"
She was confused, why didn't they open the lights? "Why is it so dark?" she asked the woman, who was possibly a nurse.
Just then, the sound of people rushing in met her ears.
"Miss! I am your doctor. can you see how many fingers I'm holding up?"
"Are you kidding me? Someone open the lights before asking me to look! Wait... I can't...see anything! Don't...don't tell me..." she trailed off as the realization hit her: the darkness, the gasps of the nurses, the questions...
"Miss...we were afraid that this would be the case. The accident has affect your eyes more than your body. I'm very sorry to say that you have lost your sight..." the doctor informed her, crushing the spirits and dreams of hers into pieces.
"no...no...NO! It can't be...it can't be true. Please tell me it's not true" she was now denying the truth yet she did know the truth. she just couldn't accept it, she was so close to debuting along with her best friend; they had their own fan base, she had already written their title songs and was just about to release them.
She felt something wet dripping down her cheeks, obviously those were tears. She started to break down, the feeling of lost, the feeling of disappointment. She had just missed her chance.
She started to shake her head, she pulled her hair, she hit her head with her fists. She was so stupid, if only she hadn't gone to that party, if only she hadn't drive when she had drunk, if only she had turned the wheels fast enough to avoid the truck coming towards them from the wrong lane, if only she convinced Jiyong to drive, a little more persuasively...at the thought of her friend she opened her mouth to ask the doctor about Jiyong, but no words came out as the nurse had injected her with something.
And in a heartbeat, she had lost consciousness again...
........................................................................................................................................................................................
In the middle of the room where a tiny ray of sunlight was shining through the little opening between the heavily-guarded curtains, two men were conversing in hushed whispers.
"When are you thinking about breaking the news to her?" the man in the white coat, which means that he was a doctor, asked the other man while looking at the girl sleeping on her hospital bed.
"She is already asking about her, we can't just keep changing the subject. She is already suspecting something. She had also asked to see you a lot of times already Bang Shi Hyuk-shii" the doctor added.
"That is why I am here; I am sure that she wants to talk to me about her debut plans" he sighed. "And for the other problem, she will find out about the truth sooner or later. I think later would be a better option though"
The sound of someone sitting up startled them both, "What about now?" the girl asked darkly, she had been listening to them from the start.
"Will you finally tell me what happened to Jiyong? Is she well?" the girl asked eagerly, although she had suspected that something bad was about to hit her.
And boy, was she right, the next sentence Bang Shi Hyuk CEO-nim has said had her breaking down yet again.
"Haneul-ah, I am so sorry. They...they were unable to save her. She was lost right on the spot, when the medics arrived, she was...she was already..." her CEO trailed off unable to finish the sentence himself. After all, those two were like the two daughters he never had. They had been trainees since they were young that they had grown on him a lot.
She was once again blaming herself for her friend's death. Jiyong and her had been friends for over 7 years, they had met at the entertainment and had instantly clicked. They were finally given the chance to debut after 7 years of training to perfection, and yet... they had lost it.
"I'm sorry...I'm so sorry CEO-nim, I...I"
Bang Shi Hyuk widened his eyes at her apology, "What are you talking about? What are you sorry for? You didn't do anything wrong Haneul"
"Yes I did...if only I hadn't suggested to go to the party. If only I didn't drive, if only I had persuaded her to drive, if only I had think about the consequences..." Haneul couldn't stop blaming herself.
"You shouldn't blame yourself Haneul...you really shouldn't. It wasn't your fault. Yes, you were driving while you had drank but it wasn't you in the wrong. It was the truck. The driver was also drunk, more than you. And he crashed into you guys. Haneul, please don't beat yourself up over something that you didn't do"
Silence enveloped them...
Three months later, Haneul finds herself sitting in an office too familiar for her. Bang Shi Hyuk CEO-nim's office, arguing about her debut.
"I don't care Haneul, you can still debut. I will let you debut. You are an excellent and a genius person, don't let your eyes stop you Haneul. I asked the doctor and he said it was possible for you to continue dancing if you try hard enough. And it's ok even if you can't dance, you have an amazing voice. You will succeed just fine as a singer"
Suddenly she stopped speaking, she was deciding...choosing what she should go with. And she made her mind. "As I had always said PD-nim, for the last two months. I don't want to debut anymore. And it's not about my eyes. I know that if I try, I can succeed. But...it's Jiyong. I can't debut without her, we made a promise. And...at least I can repay my sins to her this way"
Bang Shi Hyuk shook his head, "if this is truly what you desire then...I have no say anymore, I have been trying to change your mind for the last two months. But our company still do need a genius like you. Will you at least continue to work for us? You can continue writing songs...you love to do that"
Haneul smiled although it didn't quite reach her eyes, "You really have the same thoughts as me CEO-nim, I can't really do anything else if it doesn't include music any way. All I know about is music. I was planning to ask you whether I can continue working here. But...I want to work anonymous, I don't want my name to be known by anyone, no one except you"
Bang Shi Hyuk sighed, "alright, but Haneul, I am sure Jiyong would like you to succeed her dreams for her too. You know how she is, I'm sure she wouldn't be blaming you"
"I know...just...just until my guilt wears off. Let me work anonymous until then..."
"Alright...well, I got a group for you to start working on as soon as possible"
"good because I have a lot of drafts from when I was bored in the hospital. For now, I guess I need to practice the guitar again. I haven't played for three months and I can't see so, it's a special practice I guess" Haneul smiled again, yet the smile didn't reach her eyes once again, almost as if she was forcing herself to smile.
"Alright. Well, good luck in your practice. And try to find a draft by next week I guess. Their comeback album 'The Most Beautiful Moment in Life' is coming soon"
"Wow, PD-nim, that is a long ass name for an album" and with that she winked, smirked and walked out of the room.
One she was out she went to the rooftop and whispered, "forgive me Jiyong, although I want to give up on music, I just can't seem to do so. I will repay my sins, even if you don't want me to. At least let me take away my own guilt"
She smiled towards the sky, this time her smile was real, just that it was filled with sadness, and broken.
"I'm sorry"
