I woke up in the dark. I didn't know what I was doing there, or where I was. I only recognized the suffocating silence of the trees. I was cold, and hungry.

'Hello?' I couldn't bring myself to say more, my jaw hurt when I talked. I closed my eyes and listened. I didn't know what I was listening for, but I knew I would hear something eventually.

Water. I heard a stream nearby and started limping on the snow towards it, trying not to step on my right foot too much. When I reached the water, I stared at my reflection. My forehead was covered in blood. I washed the red off with the freezing water, ignoring the sting. I have to find someone. I watched as the water moved down, making its way down the hill. I followed it.

I walked for hours until I finally saw a light, and a car pull over. A man ran out and caught me just before I fell.

Hours later, I found myself being questioned at the police station. But whatever they asked, I couldn't answer. Not because I was scared. Not because I didn't want to. Truth is, I couldn't remember anything before the incident in the woods.

'Can you tell me how old you are?' the policeman asked me. I shook my head, letting a single tear fall down my cheek. I glanced sideways, at the mirror on the wall. A grey-eyed stranger was looking back at me. She was pale, skinny, and looked as though she hadn't eaten in days. Her short brown hair was covered in dust and dirt. She mimicked my movements as I reached to feel it. It was sticky, from the blood.

'Can you tell me your name?' he asked. I ignored him, moving some of the hair to reveal a patched-up wound, close to the left ear of my forehead. I touched it for only a moment, jerking my hand away when it stung. I closed my eyes.

Gunshots.

I couldn't see them, but I could hear them, they were everywhere. The hands holding me suddenly lost their grip and let go of my own. Screams erupted through the air. I wasn't sure whether it was me screaming or not, I couldn't remember the sound of my voice. The unknown sound was saying something.

Nora

'Nora,' I finally said.

'That's your name?' he looked at me in hope. I nodded. He sat back down, believing my lie. Maybe I'd remember my name later, but for now, the name Nora seemed to be the only consolation to my forgetfulness.

'Nora,' he continued after a while, 'can you remember anything at all, before being found in the forest?'

Yes.

'No,' his eyes held disappointment at my answer. I looked down at my feet. I wasn't wearing shoes, only socks. My hands were wet with the tears I cried since my awakening. After a while, another man came in, and started questioning me. Every once in a while the men would talk in hushed voices at the door, and sometimes I'd pick up on something they were saying. She looks like she could be about fourteen years old, or, there isn't any information on her anywhere. I could feel their glares weighing down on me, the pity in their voices. After a couple days of questioning, they finally let me go.

Even four years later, I thought about that night often. Almost as if it were mocking me, the sky was clear and bright back then. Just like tonight, I thought as I climbed down the wall out of my window, soundlessly so that they wouldn't hear.
