CHAPTER ONE

I slowly wake up, I feel as if I'm still dreaming. It takes a while, but things finally begin to fall into place and I suddenly remember what day it is today.

It's the Mission Nomination Day today.

Let me the Mission and what exactly Nomination Day is.

Fifty-two years ago, a tragic, terrible nuclear war erupted amongst almost all of the countries in the world; to many, this can also be known as The Grey War. Almost every country was wiped out and almost all of the population was killed by this horrible tragedy, in the end only one continent survived, that continent is North America.

Or as we all know it now, Merriton.

After The Grey War occured, Canada, the U.S.A. and Mexico; the three countries that North America once contained all made a decision to merge together to create a larger, stronger, better government for an overall better country. They created what we now call Merriton.

There's nothing to be afraid about, people should and are almost always honoured to embark on the Mission. The purpose of the Mission is to send eighteen teenagers, nine boys and nine girls, between the ages of thirteen and eighteen to one of many different countries to search and explore, looking for other people or other civilizations that may have been created. Our government has hopes to that at some point they'll be able to band together with other civilizations that have been created and to build the world back up to what it once was before the war, even if they have to put away their differences. Every year they send one group down for a month, in hopes to find something, if the group isn't able to find anything, the surviving teenagers will be brought back home.

For the year leading up to Nomination Day every year, anyone eligible to be nominated must train. Then, on Nomination Day, trainers from all around the country will nominate hundreds of people, the President of our country will then review each eligible subject and decide the eighteen to embark on the Mission.

Nomination Day is on June fifth every year. Two days later the eighteen are selected.

It's June fifth.

Today is Nomination Day.

I'm fourteen, so I've been through the stress and anxiety of all this once before. I wasn't nominated last year. Hopefully I'm nominated this year, and possibly even selected.

We'll see what happens.
