Scarlet woke up to a loud knocking on her door. She looked up, bleary-eyed, and saw Wolf roll over next to her mumbling about tomatoes. She quietly stepped outside of their bedroom, grabbed her shotgun, and peeked through the hole in her door. She gasped with joy, dropped her shotgun, and swung open the door. Cinder and Kai were here!!!! She shouted to Wolf to get up just as she ran to embrace Cinder.
"Stars! You're here!!!!" She hugged Kai and then busied herself as she walked towards the kitchen.
"What can I get you to eat, you must be famished. I have tomatoes, eggs, toast? Just name a food and I probably have it!" Scarlet quietly wondered why she had so much nervous energy, then she gasped and looked Kai in the eye. "Why are here? What is wrong? You came with no warning!" Kai took a deep breath and looked at Cinder, eyes pleading her to explain.
Cinder sighed and said, "Scarlet, we have some news. Ran and his pack attacked Luna. Yesterday. They killed two-hundred Lunars." Scarlet blinked slowly, absorbing the news.
"Why, Cinder. Why would they do that? I thought they were only after Wolf and me." Her brows were furrowed, and she laid a protective hand on her belly.
Kai spoke harshly, not being able to stand the silence, "They were trying to get to you! They wanted you to give yourself up! There's nothing we can do without hurting people," he rubbed his temples, and Scarlet could glimpse just how exhausted and powerless he felt. Scarlet grabbed a tomato, taking her anger out on it, ignoring the juice that spilled over her pajamas as she cut it.
"There is something we can do!" she said as she searched her brain, "we can trick Ran. We just have to buy enough time to prove to him and his pack that we are NOT powerless, we CAN defeat him!!!" She sighed putting the tomatoes on a plate, "Wolf!!!! Come downstairs NOW!!!" Cinder heard a thump as he rolled off the bed, threw on a shirt, and stomped downstairs.
He asked angrily, "Why are you yelling at m---?" Wolf cut himself off as he saw Scarlet, her hopeless eyes tearing up, and then shifted his gaze to Cinder and Kai, both with looks of frustration. Wolf stepped towards the Scarlet, kissed her forehead, and then proceeded to scarf down the tomato, juice spilling, and said, "What's the problem now?" as Cinder took a deep breath, preparing to fill him in.
