Adam awoke with Brielle still fast asleep next to him. He reached over and removed a piece of hair from in front of her closed eyes. She reminded him of his late wife, Sandra. Once the infection took over, Sandra and him took shelter on Peril Mountain. Adam shivered as memories flashed across his mind. Memories of finding Sandra tearing another man in half. Her eyes were pitch black and her smile was replaced with a look of intense hunger. Rumors went around that it was his brother Ashton that had caused Sandra’s demise. Soon after, Ashton disappeared, confirming Adam’s suspicions.
Brielle groaned as her hand felt for her wound. Adam gently rolled her over to get a closer look and found a green substance oozing from it. Her forehead felt as if it were on fire. Her skin was clammy.
“Brielle, I need you to wake up okay?” He began to panic. He wasn’t human but was not in any way capable of completely healing her. He too, lacked any kind of nutrition.
“Brielle?”
Brielle tried to respond to Adam but felt oddly at peace. It was almost as if she was given a sedative. The only problem was that her wound felt like it was on fire.
“Mmm,” was all she could manage to reply.
A shuffling outside the rusty door interrupted Adam’s thoughts for the time being, still he tried to keep focused on getting the infection out of Brielle’s wound.
"Just shove him in," A male voice shouted.
A tall dirty man was shoved into the cold room. Adam immediately recognized the familiar face. His brother. Ashton looked as if he worked in a coal mine. His scruffiness matched his ragged hair. The emotions flashing across his face were unrecognizable to Adam.
"Adam?" he asked, barely able to stand up. Adam quickly walked around him. It was as if they were walking in circles.
"Stay away from me. I will kill you. First I have to save her," Adam pointed to Brielle.
"Why are you so hostile towards me? Do you not know where I have been?" He asked confused.
"Where would that be?" Adam asked, again trying to remove the infection.
“Here. I have been here this whole time. The whole time that you never looked for me, am I right?” Adam froze.
“You killed Sandra.” Adam stated coldly. His blood beginning to boil.
“No, I did not. I have been here for five years. Which you would have known had you bothered to look for me!” Ashton shouted at him.
“Ashton, I’m… I’m sorry,” tears filled Adam’s eyes, making it harder to finish cleaning Brielle’s infection.
“Who is she?” Ashton asked, ignoring Adam. Adam wanted to beg for his brother’s forgiveness, but he knew it would do no good.
“Constance’s daughter.”
“That’s her?” Ashton almost seemed excited.
“This is her. They have hurt her pretty bad.” Adam’s heart broke for her. Brielle began tossing and turning. Adam sat flat on the floor and pulled her into his arms. Immediately she calmed down.
“Adam?” Brielle asked as she rubbed her forehead. Her skin still felt like it was on fire.
“Brielle? How are you feeling?”Adam asked, checking her forehead.
“I’m okay, I guess,” Brielle replied. She would never be okay as long as she was being held prisoner.
"I believe the vaccine for one of your mother's experiments is in your blood." Ashton blurted. Brielle hadn’t even realized another man was in the room. All her senses immediately on alert. Brielle jumped to her feet, secretly regretting the fast movement.
