Alexander soonly found himself lying in a firelit place with bruised limbs and a bad headache. Two low voices from the fireplace.
"We should just kill the darn thing."snapped a sharp voice.
"We can't kill it. Not after we just taken it in and helped with it's wounds. It would be murdering a guest."said a curiously husky, earthy voice, as Alexander noticed.
"We should still ---"began the first voice.
"Good grief Zorro!"exclaimed the second voice. "Of course we're not going to murder it. For shame, Zorro. I will give it a drink."
A dark shape approached the bed. Alexander felt an arm slipped gently under his shoulders --- if it was exactly an arm. The shape somehow seemed wrong. The face that bent down towards him seemed wrong too. He can see the very hairy, very long nose, and it has white patches that shimmered in the firelight. He gave something sweet and hot was on his lips and Alexander drank. Once Alexander regain his sight he saw it was not a man's but a badger's, but it seemed larger, friendlier, and more intelligent. He saw, too, that he was on a bed of heather, in a cave. By the fireplace sat a little bearded man, so much wilder, shorter, hairier, and thicker than Doctor Cornelius, Alexander knew that the he is a Black Dwarf (his hair is black, so his hair and his straight beard) and the Red Dwarf had disappeared yesterday night, ancient Dwarf with no human in him. Alexander knew he finally found the Old Narnians. Alexander was able to speak and walk again on the second day.
"I was flying for my life. The King wants to kill me, if you do kill me the King will be very pleased."said Alexander.
"Why's that? What have you been doing Human to make the foul of Alejandro at your age?"asked Trufflehunter.
"He's my uncle."began Alexander, when Zorro jumped up with a dagger in hand.
"There you are!"he cried. "Not only a Telmarine but a close kin and heir to our greatest enemy. Are you still mad enough to let this human live?" He would of stabbed Alexander, if Trufflehunter hadn't got in the way, forced him back to his seat, and bared his teeth at the Black Dwarf as the Badger spoke to the Black Dwarf.
"Once and for all, Zorro will be quiet for a few minutes or must I sit on your head?"snapped Trufflehunter at Zorro.
Zorro grumbled under his breath, but he promised to behave, while Trufflehunter was asking for Alexander's name and story. After Alexander finished his his story there was a moment silence.
"That's really sad my prince."said Trufflehunter, sympathetic.
"I don't like it."said Zorro. "I didn't know there were stories about us being told among Humans. The less they know about us the better. Not to mention those renegade Dwarf. I hate 'em. I hate 'em worse than the Humans. You mark my words -- no good will come from this."
"Don't you go talking about things that you don't understand, Zorro,"said Trufflehunter. "You Dwarfs are forgetful and changeable as the Humans themselves. I'm beast and a Badger. We don't change. We hold on. I say great good will come from it."
