I couldn't wait to go back to the Jones' the next night. I couldn't decide if it was the child herself or that she was my first field case in nearly a century. Staying in a dark office while other Creepers and Monsters got cases was a little depressing.

Even though I was excited to be back out and in action, scaring that little girl and haunting her nightmares made me sick to my stomach. She was only six and she'd already been through so much, the very thought of anyone harming this little girl burned my blood. But, it was strange. After everything she'd been through, she still had that little sparkle in her eyes that every little girl should have.

"Juno," I looked up at my boss, a well dressed demon with red skin and black ram horns. "Congratulations on your new case. If anyone could scare that little girl, it would be you."

"Thank you, sir." I lied, but he seemed satisfied with the lie. Last night, I put myself as her full-time Monster so that no one else would attempt to scare her. I lied on the file and said I'd scared her, if I hadn't, my bosses would have sent another, scarier monster to her.

I couldn't wait until sunset to leave and see Everly Rose, so I took off early and went to her house. She lived in a shabby two-bedroom house just outside the small-town of Northport Oregon. It was still early, and like I'd expected, Everly Rose was playing on the hill behind her house.

For a few minutes, I stood at the edge of the woods and watched her. She was pushing her little brown bear of the old swing, giggling and laughing. She was adorable.

I was so busy watching her, I didn't realize she was looking directly at me. "Hi Miss monster lady!" She yelled, waving her hand frantically over her head. Before I could move, she was already running down the hill towards me. I laughed and walked up the hill towards her, before she could get too close to the darkening woods.

"Hello, Everly Rose," I smiled down at her just in front of me. She grinned up at me and took my hand, pulling me up the hill behind her.

"Come play with me!" She giggled, then stopped once she'd managed to pull me up the hill. "Wait here while I go get another doll and my tea set!" She ordered, before rushing back down to her house.

She disappeared inside while I looked around. The ratty old bear sitting on the swing was missing one of it's black button eyes, but it was obvious it was very sentimental to her. Or at least that's how the best smelt, considering the bear had a mixture of fresh and older scent. She had to have had it since she was a year old or younger.

"I'm back, Miss monster lady!" Everly Rose called, tracking back up the hill with a bag on her back and a stuffed lion in her arms. She dumped the toy and bag on the ground in front of me and plopped down. "Let's play,"

Everly Rose and I had a pretend tea party on the hill for awhile, before she seemed to get bored and started asking me questions.

"Why do you look like that?" Everly Rose asked, moving to run her small hand over one of my horns.

"Because I'm a monster." I stated, flicking my tail at her feet ~not hard enough to hurt the child, just enough so she knew where she stood.

"But you're so pretty!" She stated, reaching down to touch my tail. "I thought monsters was supposed to be scary?"

"Well, you've seen the other monsters. We are scary, but just like you humans, we're made differently," I smiled and watched her, my sharp teeth poking my bottom lip. "We're all scary in our own way,"

"I don't believe you're scary," She stated, sitting on my lap to and examining my nails. "So pretty," she whispered, running her hand over my pale skin.

"Everly Rose?" I asked after a minute of her examining me.

"You can just call me one," she giggled, looking up at me.

"Okay, Rose," I paused, debating asking. She was too young. Would she cry? Would she run and hide from me? I had to know, though. "Who was that man last night?"

She got quiet for a minute, I could feel her sadness as she dropped my hand. "That's one of mommy's boyfriends," She mumbled, a small tear rolled down her cheek.

"There, there," I pulled the little girl against my chest as she began to cry. "Shhh, it's okay now," I whispered, rocking her a little and rubbing her back. "I'm here now. Nothing while happen as long as I'm with you, darling."

"He hurt me, Miss monster," she cried into my chest, wrapping her little arms around my neck and hiding her face.

"It's okay, little Rose," I mumbled, before kissing the top of her head. "He'll never hurt you again, I promise."

"Will you protect me?" She sniffled, looking up at me with sad gray eyes.

"Of course," I promised, my cold, black heart melting for this little girl. Who knew this little girl could make me like this?

I was one of the best monsters out there, but this little girl make me weak.

"Come on, want a piggyback ride?" I asked Everly Rose after she calmed down a little. She nodded her head sadly, getting off me so I could pick her up. I grinned and put her on my shoulders, standing at my full height.

Rose giggled and held onto my horns as I started prancing around the hill.

Never in my life had I imagined I, a higher ranked monster, would be giving my child a piggyback ride to cheer her up.

I guess you really can't judge a monster by his or her face.
