Labored breaths exhaled out in visible cold fog. Dark blue eyes widening in intrigue curiosity. The little boy lifted his head above the rotten log buried in snow- only a couple feet away but it felt like miles.
The black fur seemed so soft, fluttering slightly in the gentle breeze. Ears perked and pointed, twitching and swatting down when the brisk wind blew softly into them.
"Pretty."
The word was mouthed, but the slightest whisper left the kid's chapped lips. The creature's ear swatted in the direction of the faint sound, turning his head slightly, passed the trees and towards the eyes of the boy.
A gasp escaped his lips as he quickly ducked down. His light blue sweater and yellow shirt riving up his spine and exposing the low of his back. He curled his fingers slightly in the damped snow, trying to calm his anxiousness and leaving him something to focus's on.
After a minute of assurance, he twisted slightly. Now on his knees and waiting to look over the log. The boy slowly rose his head, biting his lip to keep it from quivering.
His wide blue eyes finally passed the horizon of the log, only to be met by golden ones. His breath hitched, a choke keeping him from letting out a scream. The animal tilted its head in observance. A sincere curiosity of the tiny human in front of him, so wide-eyed in the wolf's presence.
Brown hair fell slowly into the boy's eyes as the wolf moved the slightest inch closer. He bared his teeth slightly but not in a vicious account, but only to blow the gentlest of warm air onto his pale cheeks, his hair fluttering out of his eyes.
A breath was finally exhaled from the boy, a mere attempt to calm himself. The brunette now shifted in a more comfortable way.
"H-hello," The boy said carefully.
The creature backed away, snarling do the harsh sudden wind. He sat, then lay down. Moving his head to motion to the boy to come closer.
And that he did. Hopping over and landing in the ice as the wolf licked his paws. The boy watched carefully still crouched down near the log. He then sat.
The animal turned his head over to the boy, chuckling silently.
To say the wolf was surprise, well, was quite the understatement. He was bewildered that the little boy hasn't bolted for his life, running as far as he could. Instead he just sat there, leaning forward enthusiastically.
Legs crossed and hands on the ground, fingering the snow. The boy eyed the wolf. Wondering if he is dreaming or accidentally ate some bad berries yet, the boy pushed away his doubts and gathered all the courage he could possibly muster.
"C-can I come c-closer?"
It was a simple question but to the kid, it seemed as if he was about to scare it away.
Golden eyes narrowed, so the boy was scared yet, intrigued.
The creature rose and the boy immediately froze. Blue eyes watching every moment the wolf did and when the wolf just streched, the boy was able to breath again.
He then sat, head tilting to the boy and with a simple nod, the creature motioned the kid to come closer. Though, the motion was clear, the child took at least a minute to process it.
And once he did, he couldn't find his feet faster. One step after another, he gradually became closer, and once he was a couple inches away, he kneeled down, resting his behind on his calves with his shoulders squared and breathing anxiously.
A huff escaped the dark creature, making the boy clench his fists. It was evident he was scared but that curiosity was weighing out his logic, at least the bit that the ten year old had.
"I'm gonna ta-touch you, now." The boy stated, he was being cautious to a certain degree.
The wolf's face contorted as of giving him a hurry it up kind of look. And when that thought came to mind, courage suddenly filling his chest, the tiny hand was off the boy's thigh and fingertips gently whisped the soft, jet black fur.
A gasp escaped chapped lips when the wolf leaned into the boy's hand. A satisfied gruff sounding from the wolf's throat, surprising the boy when all he was doing was giving fair strokes down the crown of the creature's head down the soft curves of his back.
Nails found the back of the wolf's ears and scratched them gently, using his other hand to finger under the start of his jaw. Blue eyes took notice of the jagged scar down the left side of his shoulders, accompanied with two similar ones parallel that traced down to his elbow.
"What's your name, can I tell you mine?" The boy questioned.
Their eyes connected, and the wolf using his hind legs toppled over the boy, tackiling the boy into the wet snow. Letting out a yelp, the kid landed harshly on his elboys, the yellow fabric ripping a tad. The creature mounted over him considerably. There faces so close and when his forehead gently touched the tips of soft dark fur, he was frozen.
"Joshua."
Sharp teeth clenched tightly into the boy's shoulder, ripping a scream from the ten year old's throat. Blood oozed between the conjunction of his neck and shouler before a warm, rough tongue gave it a quick lap.
Wind blew hard, grasping fallen leaves with it up the hill in a dramatic attention. It caught the boy's eyes as he was drained of his energy, his arms gave out and he fell onto his back with thud. He finally felt the teeth release his abused skin.
Watching the wind spiral upwards and with dance like movements. It headed to the dirt path and his home a bit farther up.
Remembering the dark wolf, his head snapped back but it was too late. The creature was gone. Leaving a name in the air.
It was the boy's name, but that's not what bothered him the most.
He didn't even get to say goodbye.
To his mate.
