Chapter's song: I Can't Fall In Love Without You by Zara Larsson
The question hangs in the air and I freeze for a moment. I'm not going to admit that! It would be like signing a death-sentence or something! I can only imagine how Mark would tease me about it.
No sir! I definitely don't want that!
Nonchalantly, and trying to mask my real panic, I shrug. "We can talk about that, or we can talk about my blog. It's up to you."
Mark opens his mouth to protest and then closes it. "You're not playing fair, Kate."
I can't help but smile as I bask in my own victory. "I never said I did."
He chuckles before raising both hands in mock surrender. "Okay, you got me. I do want to know about your mystery blog, but not before you tell me what really happened to make you quit."
A sinking feeling settles on my stomach. I can't tell him the real reason. I don't want to make him feel bad."I was just tired of answering petty messages, that's it."
Mark takes a sip of champagne once more. "We both know that's not it, Kate. You were really excited a few hours ago." I can't ignore the way his eyes look hurt for a moment.
Great. Now the tightening of my chest is because I made him feel bad either way.
Silence reigns over the room as I try to explain it in a way that won't make it all worse, but after a minute of thinking it through, I'm blank. And I know the whole situation is now bordering on horrid. You can feel the tension building up.
Sighing, I get up and start pacing the room. "It's not that I don't trust you, Mark. I do. But I just feel utterly uncomfortable telling you about it."
He stares at me for a moment before saying, "It's because of me, isn't it?"
I bit my lip. "Kind of." He raises an eyebrow. "Okay," I roll my eyes, "It's totally because of you."
His lips form a tight line as I sit beside him. "They wanted an interview or something?"
I almost snort. I wouldn't have minded the interview. I mean, that's as far as they should have gone through in the first place.
I crease my brows. "They wanted me to act like a spy on you," I say in almost a whisper, "all of you."
Mark curses under his breath, but I can hear him. He shakes his head and clenches his hands. "Did they give you a contract or anything we could use against them?"
"They're unethical, but they're not dumb!"
"Bloody hell," he mutters before getting up and running a hand through his hair.
"Hey," I stand up and walk towards him. "It's okay. It was a crappy job like you said. I'm better off without them."
His stare is deep as he looks at me. "I'm really sorry about this, Kate."
