Invisibility
Chapter one:
I lifted my knees to my chest, and leaned my head against the cold, bus window. I let my eyelids fall shut, and my thoughts turned to dreams more quickly than I imagined.
--
"Mommy?" I called, tossing back the covers. "Mommy?"
A shriek echoed in the halls coming from my mom's room in our small apartment.
"Mommy!" I cried, a jolt of energy filling my body, causing me to leave the room more quickly than I thought was humanly possible.
I ran to her bedroom, and jiggled the handle on the door.
Locked, but she always locked her door.
"Mommy! Let me in!" Tears welled in my eyes as I banged on the door with my tiny fist.
My mom whimpered, and then the room went quiet, except for the shuffling of feet, and the soft thud as something landed on the grass outside our window.
"Mommy?" I said, questionably.
"Ashleigh, step away from the door, and I will unlock it."
The voice belonged to my mom's current boyfriend, Will.
I obliged, and took a teeny step backwards.
There was a soft "click" as the door was unlocked.
I stepped towards it, turned the handle, and stood face to face with Will.
"I know what you're going to see might be bad, but you will never tell anyone about this being me, okay? If you tell, I promise I will come back for you. Good-bye, Ashleigh."
Furious knocks shook the front door, and just as I looked back to see who was there, Will was gone. Just gone.
My gaze fell to what was before my eyes.
My mom was lying, motionless on the floor, a hole in the precise spot where her heart was pierced, her eyes glazed over with fear.
I gulped, and wiped the tears from my eyes with the back of my hand.
I crossed the floor, and twisted the doorknob.
"Ashleigh!" Mrs. Levi exclaimed, her chubby arms crushing me into a hug. "Thank Goodness you're alright! It sounded like someone had been murdered!" She giggled.
The tears found my eyes again, and I buried my head into her large chest.
"You have no idea..." My little voice squeaked, and I bit my lip.
"What do you mean, honey?" She questioned, gently squeezing my shoulders and holding me out in front of her. "Oh Lord... Where's you mother, baby?"
"Call the police..." I choked out.
--
"Ashleigh? Ashleigh?" Becca said, shaking me. Her voice soothed me.
"Yeah?" I said, trying to not look at her.
"That dream again, babes?" She said, placing her arm around my neck, and squeezing. It comforted me.
"Yeah, Bec. More like nightmare, though. Hey, do you know when we're gonna be there?" There being our newest foster home. Becca and I had gotten lucky, and after making friends in the adoption agency, were put together into the same foster home.
"Uh. Maybe thirty minutes?"
Becca's mom had gone to jail on a drug charge when she was eight, and her dad didn't want the responsibility. Being a Mexican American, a majority of her family was back in Mexico, so since she was born here, she was put into an adoption agency. No one wanted her. No one wanted me either.
