You slowly opened your mailbox, hoping and praying that the envelope would arrive today. The envelope with something anyone would want, money.
Your check from the insurance company was due any day now. That was, if they even agreed to send it. Oh, what you could do with $10,000,000. It was an off chance that you'd receive the money, but hope seemed worth being on the line.
Your car was totaled and your wife was forcibly removed from the area.
"Oh she's pathetic. This town has become a disaster and we would only want useful, brawny men to work and establish a happier, richer, and sturdier town." had said the mayor, a close friend of yours.
Your money was gone. Completely. The storm wiped it and your valuables away into an unknown land. The town was shook up from such a disaster that any authoritative figure would demand a measly, fragile woman to make part with the town.
Improvement would take a while, maybe years and years, and any unhelpful human was declared useless and a burden to keep around.
And with that storm you were robbed of your house, money, job, food, resources, and wife.
You missed her; she was a sparkle in your life. Despite her dull. blended in looks, she had an amazing personality. Her blonde hair that had been shaded with gray coated over a beautiful mind that seemed half the age she actually was. Her hazel eyes still had a sparkle from the day you met her. Those pearly teeth of hers flashed warm smiles that cause you to melt inside. Her shortness seeming to be perfection to you because it made you feel more tall, as if that made you more manly. Yet, she was gone. Forcibly removed...
The hotel mailbox designated for your room came slightly ajar as you opened it with much anticipation. And once it was fully visible inside, you saw the envelope you'd been craving for the past week.
Quickly, you opened the seal and marveled at the check supplied inside. You lifted the check and a paper dropped from the envelope before it fell onto the floor. With a bend of the waist and a flick of the hand, you snatched up the sheet. By gently gliding your finger into the middle of the paper and moving it upward, you unfolded the white page.
Dear Mr. Thompson, it read, the attached check is to be deposited before July 18th. If failure to complete this requirement, all payment shall be invalid immediately. We hope you follow through with these procedures and find our help useful.
You checked your watch. It was June 17th, 5:00 pm. Almost instantly, you grabbed your coat and rushed out of the hotel lobby. With little effort, you made your way to the run-down bank. With no door due to severe damage to the building, you stepped inside onto rubble and valuables.
"Ah Mr. Thompson!" remarked the towns finest banker, Mr. Bill. His convenient name had placed him high in the business almost immediately after he began. Never making a mistake in his life, and personal interest in costumers made Mr. Bill the top banker the town could have.
You smile. "Yes Mr. Bill. I would like to-"
"Redeem your check, I presume?" chuckled the old timer. "You're lucky I happen to be behind schedule today or else I'd have been out of here by 5:00."
"I'm aware that I've caused an inconvenience," you say, trying to sound somewhat professional, "but, you see, I have just received the check today and it happens to be due today or else further disabled."
He smiled. "Well c'mon, then!" he exclaimed, extending his hand. You reluctantly hand him the check.
As Mr. Bill began to work his banker magic, he also began the start of a fresher conversation. "So, Mr. Thompson," he addressed, "What do you plan to do with your money?"
You chuckled. Your answer was easy!
How do you reply to Mr. Bill?
A. Give it to the town to fund improvements. (Chapter 3)
B. Take it and leave town to find your wife and take her somewhere to start a new life. (Chapter 4)
C. Screw the town and your wife. Go on an adventure of your own!
