Marina stretched out her body and purred, much like a cat. She glanced about her. The sun was just peeking above the tips of the mountains in the distance that marked the end of their land, Kamonia. Beyond the mountains was the heavy desert, and beyond that, land of Man. If Marina dared fly high enough, she would be able to barely see the land all dragons had originated from. Dragons migrated to Kamonia after it became clear that Man and Dragon could not co-exist.
"Marina," Ecru yawned. His eyes were still half closed. "Marina!?" Ecru's eyes snapped open after he realized Marina was not right next to him.
"What?" called back Marina. She was standing and watching the forest.
"Oh, Marina, don't do that! I thought you left me, and..." Ecru's voice died down. He got up and strolled to where Marina stood. "What are you doing?"
"I thought I saw something," Marina reported to her mate. Ecru nodded, his eyes squinting into the forest as well. "Well, I guess it was a feeling. Like I was being watched. Don't you ever get that feeling?"
Ecru tilted his head for a bit, then shrugged. "Maybe once or twice. Huh, yeah, I feel it too. Maybe we should go check it out."
Marine glanced at her mate, somewhat surprised. "Well, that's a change, not staying out here and playing it safe?"
Ecru chuckled. "Well, ever since I had a mate to take care of..." He nuzzled Marina, then rubbed necks with her.
Marina moved with Ecru's neck as he touched her, but otherwise, her gaze never left the forest; her mouth didn't even move into a smile. It was as if she was in a stupor.
"Marina?" Ecru nudged her head with his, and she blinked hard.
"What? Oh, sorry I've been so out of it. I don't know what happened. It's just that, I feel somewhat drawn into what's in there."
"Well then, what are we waiting for? Let's go!" Ecru turned and began walking into the forest.
Dragons didn't go into forests often as you couldn't fly easily in them, thus giving them a disadvantage.
Marina smiled and followed her mate. The two dragons walked for a while until they came to a small stream.
"Ecru, let's see what a forest has. I'm hungry!"
Ecru peered into the stream. "Sorry dear, there's no whale."
"But I don't eat whale!" protested Marina, before realizing he was teasing her. "Well, there's not even any sizable fish."
Ecru peered around. "I don't hear any bear. Hey, what's that?"
Marina turned to where he was looking. It was a strange creature, and it looked very scrawny compared to the bear. This animal had strange horns on it's head. There was another, smaller one near it. This one had no horns at all. The animals had not taken notice to the two dragons, who were still quite a distance away. Because of this, the animals were still nibbling at tender shoots of plants.
"Marina, I think I've heard of these animals before," whispered Ecru. His hot breath warmed her neck scales. "Some other dragon I used to know said Man called them 'deer' or something. I'm not sure if they're tasty or anything."
Marina nodded. "How are we going to hunt though? We can't fly!"
Ecru made a face. "I have fire," he said hopefully.
"Yeah, and you'll turn them to ashes, and I'm not talking about the kind of tree either! I don't want to eat carbon."
"Well, you're a water dragon. What can you do? Besides swim well of course."
Marina rolled her eyes. "Maybe we can ambush them from above?" She slowly began climbing a tree next to her.
Ecru blinked several times before sighing and following suit up another tree. It wasn't long before two dragons came tumbling down, dragging down their respective trees.
Marina reared back her head and roared, irritated, and a beam of ice shot out of her mouth. Surprised, she stopped. The beam of ice sliced at a tree top overhead, and it came tumbling down, leaving a hole in the forest canopy. Ecru leaped out of the way as the brush came crashing down.
"Marina!? I never knew you could do that!"
Marina stood, staring up at where the branches used to be, her mouth agape. "Neither did I," she said softly.
"Well, did you know what happened? What you felt when you did that?"
"I don't know, I just roared, and it just streamed out of my mouth! It was like, a mix of ice and water! I don't even know where it came from!"
Ecru, concerned, nudged her to the stream. "Why don't you drink some water? Try and replenish the water you just lost. If you were a fire breather like me, you'd know you can't breathe fire all day, you have to replenish your chemicals that will ignite. You have to replenish your fire venom." As Marina complied and began lapping up cool water, Ecru continued his rambling. "Well, come to think of it, you have been drinking a fair about of water. Maybe it just takes a while to built up the proper amount of water before you can actually use that, uh, beam. I wonder how you get ice into the mix?" He began speculating about a chemical that might reacted with another chemical she contained therefore making the temperature of the water colder than it's freezing point.
Marina glared at her mate, who took the hint and shut his mouth.
"Either way, we could fly out of the forest to hunt."
Marina nodded her head reluctantly. She still wanted to continue into the forest, but didn't quite know what to look for, so it was probably better if they just left and went back some other day.
Marina flapped her wings mightily and followed her mate out of the forest, into the land where they knew how to hunt, and Marina could experiment about her newfound ability. As the two dragons left, two horse-like creatures materialized out of the shadow.
"Well, what are we going to do about those two lizard things?" a dark grey one asked the other. It had occasional blue stripes that hashed it's body. Two stripes ran vertical down it's right eye. It was a male
"They might come back, but whatever. Hey, let's go back to the land of Man and have a snack there, eh?" The one that spoke now was also the same dark grey, but instead of blue stripes, this one had purple stripes that ran it's body. It's mane had a single purple streak about two inches into it's mane. This one was female.
The one with blue stripes chuckled. "Yes, I'm in the mood for a nice fat cow."
The two unicorns both whinnied and reared into the air. Then, their form became what looked like blobs of dust that slowly dissipated into the air. And with that, the unicorns were gone.
