{Mason's POV}
"Cody for the love of God! It's 8:57 can you hurry up!" Troye yelled from the passengers seat window.
"I'm locking my door!" She quickly spun around and started walking down the path to my car. She was wearing lose jeans with ripped up knees, and a tucked in red shirt that read "See You In Hell"
She pulled open the door, throwing her backpack onto the other seat and pushing herself inside.
"Man, you're going to get dress coded the second you walk into the school I'm calling it" I laughed, and started driving away from her house.
"Dress coded- I'm I'm none of my skin's showing! And we go to a public school not a religious school!"
"Oh I completely agree but it's run by a bunch of angry Christians, I have sweaters in the trunk you can take one just in case."
Troye chuckled, and leaned his head on my arm while I drove. We talked about timetables, new teachers, clubs, the interesting and boring about school.
"Bye losers see you at lunch!" Cody leaped out of the car and bolted into the school.
"I've never seen anyone run into a school like that." Troye laughed.
"Only Cody." I added with a chuckle.
"Okay I'll meet you at the bleachers at lunch for a smoke, then I'm applying for choir so I won't see you in till after football tryouts. And I would see you in math but I have to go to guidance and switch to enriched English."
I grinned while parking my car, "Look at my busy boy."
"I'm trying to get the full high school experience!" He giggled.
"It's good It's good, I wish I was that interested I can barely get through a day here."
"Hey, it'll be alright May this year'll be better I can feel it." He rubbed my arm with a hopeful smile.
"Yeah yeah I know, maybe this year will be better." I said, more for myself to hear than Troye.
Troye peaked my cheek, and opened his car door I followed quickly behind. As soon as I stepped into the school every punch, every breakdown, every lunch alone, every "fag", but most importantly every "no, I'm straight" came flooding back to me.
"God I hate this place." I said. I looked over to Troye waiting for a word of agreement.
"Did you say something, May?" He asked, looking for the place to pick up your homeroom sheets.
"Yeah that I hate this school more than I've hated anything else. I'll see you later." I said, leaning to kiss his cheek but within a second reminding my brain that it was no longer summer and we were no longer safe to be in love; so instead I turned and went to my locker.
The day felt long, but wasn't the worst. I saw my few friends from last year, but mainly just kept my head down and did my work. Like I always did. I basically leapt out of my seat when the dismissal bell rung and I could finally go home and be with Troye without dirty looks and shoves into lockers; but of course this is high school and nothing comes easy.
The day was sunny and warm, a great September day. I sat under a tree and read, then drew, then did homework. I watched Troye do laps, and saw Cody trying out for cheerleading. I was so proud and happy for them, honestly. But I was so confused as to how I ended up dating a football player or how I befriended a cheerleader. It felt very out of place.
"Hello my Romeo, ready to go?" Troye said in a soft tone.
I felt a smile form right away as my face reddened, "of course my Juliet"
I stood up and we began walking towards the car, "y'know a lot of the guys miss you being on the team." Troye said holding my hand.
"Yeah they miss beating me up. Some are nice, but honestly most only care about sports and which girls have given head."
"I can see that, they all just seem-"
"Mason! Hey!" Someone called from behind us, immediately our hands shot apart as we turned around.
I forced a smile as the rest of the team came to bother me with god knows what.
"Your boyfriend's pretty good huh? Did you teach him?" Cassius, one of the all-star players teased.
"He taught himself. And just because we don't harass girls like you and Nathan, doesn't mean we're dating."
There was a pause. After what was said next I wished the pause lasted longer than it did.
"Yeah don't be gay Cassius, Mason and I are just neighbours." Troye said laughing it off.
Cassius laughed too, obviously happy that Troye was acting more like them and less like me. "Why do you even hang out with him? You could be really popular if you tried a bit, walked into school once with us and you'll have any girl you want." Cassius said, ignoring me.
"I could have any girl I want anyways, I don't need your help" Troye laughed again.
The team laughed, I tried to force a laugh but nothing would come out. I knew he was acting, just putting on a show so they'd leave but I hated it nonetheless.
"Hey, we're gonna go smoke do ya'll wanna come?" David asked, one of the nicer football players.
"Yeah of course." Troye replied before I could make up an excuse as to why I couldn't.
We walked some ways from the school, down a path then across a road then down another path in till it turned to dirt and the houses got further apart. They mainly talked about girls and the next game the whole walk. I just watched Troye, acting a way I never thought he would.
"Who wants the first hit?" Nathan asked, pulling a few blunts out of his jacket pocket.
"I think we should let Troye have it." Cassius smiled.
"Sure." Troye nodded happily.
Troye lit the joint, taking a long inhale, smoke falling from his mouth a few moments after. He passed it around. No one said much, everyone just had that smile of 'we're doing something we shouldn't be doing'. Everyone was quiet, in till it came by turn.
The boy next to me pipped up, "don't give it to him, I don't want to catch the gay." Everyone snickered.
"It's not a cold." I replied quickly.
"I'm sure you would know all about it, don't you May?" The boy teased.
I took the joint from the other kid's hand, quickly sticking it between my teeth and taking a drag. Then without hesitation, blowing the smoke right in the next boys face.
"Hopefully you don't catch it." I said, and turned on my heel walking down the dirt path as far away from them as I could.
Is this just how it's going to be? Was that it? 5 short months and now Troye's only interested in the popular kids? Well, you know what? I don't need him. It's fine. He can smoke by himself, and tell them his sob stories let's see how they react. Hot tears stung my face, as my chest got tighter. He'll run after me. He will. I turned around, no one behind me. Not the group, I guess I walked fast enough to leave. But not Troye either. Just a dust in the air and footprints on the road.
