"Look at this leaf! Its pink!" Sandkit squealed.

"Wooow, that's so pretty!" Pebbelkit said as she pounced on another leaf, sending it swirling into the air.

Sandkit looked down at the pink leaf lying in the sand. "I hope our clan's not worried that we're gone..." Sandkit fretted to herself.

"Well it is our apprentice ceremony today, and we can't miss out on it! I've been waiting to become an apprentice for AGES!" Pebblekit exclaimed. "They know we wouldn't miss it, and that we won't have gone far."

"Yeah, but I guess we should go back because kits aren't allowed out of camp even though we're being apprenticed today."

"Yeah I guess so. C'mon then!" Pebblekit, at first, sounded sad to leave the small rocky hollow, but at the thought of the warm camp and apprenticeship ceremony, instantly cheered up.

The two kits had only gone a couple of tail-lengths when a screech came from the sky.

They both spun around and looked up, just in time for a huge hawk to swoop down and scoop up poor Sandkit.

"SANDKIT, NO!" Pebblekit stood, frozen in shock. For a minute she just watched Sandkit as the Hawk closed on her, and Sandkit looked in horror at her sister, whose fur was being ruffled by the great gusts of wind from the hawks wings.

"PEBBLEKIT HELP!" Sandkit screeched as the sharp talons clamped around her small body.

"DON'T WORRY SANDKIT, I'LL GET THE CLAN, AND I WILL FIND YOU! I PROMISE..." Pebblekit watched as her sister was flown away, and she stared up into her sister's Ocean blue eyes, glazed with tears.

"I promise..." Sandkit only just heard Pebblekit whisper the words to herself, before she saw her sister speed away, back to the Pohutukawa tree camp.
