Chapter One
The clock ticks nearby as the young girl with short blonde hair restlessly shifts from her position. The front door is forced open.
"Tommy, I-...Tommy. Tommy, listen to me. He's the contractor, okay? I can't lose this job. I understand... Let's talk about this in the morning, okay? We'll talk about it in the morning. Alright, goodnight." the deep rumble of Joel's voice resounds in the room. He ends his call and flips the lamp on, waking his sleeping daughter from her slumber on the sofa.
"Hey." the young girl greets as she shifts from her position.
"Scoot." Joel rubs at his face, wiggling his body until he finds comfort on the sofa cushions.
"Fun day at work, huh?"
Joel sighs, "What are you still doing up? It's late." he accuses.
"Oh crud. What time is it?" her voice comes panicked, swiveling her body to face the clock hanging above the wall.
"It's way past your bedtime." the father states.
"But it's still today." Sarah happily concurs.
Sarah slides from her seat, kneeling on the carpet to locate an object.
"Honey, please not right now. I do not have the energy for this."
"Here." an outstretched hand holding a box is nudged towards Joel.
"What's this?" he eyes the gift, fumbling to unveil it.
"Your birthday."
Watching his face closely as he reveals the contents inside, Sarah timidly speaks. "You kept complaining about your broken watch... So I figured, you know.. You like it?"
Sarah beams, waiting for Joel's reaction as he straps the watch to his left wrist. "Honey, this is…"
"What?" her face drops slightly as Joel tinkers with the accessory, bringing his hand up to his ear.
"It's nice, but I-...I think it's stuck. It's not…"
Sarah's eyebrows furrow, confusion and panic flooding her voice. "What? No, no, no, no."
She looks up to see the humor on Joel's face, flinging his wrist from her grasp and shifting to lie on her side. "Oh, ha, ha." she sarcastically remarks.
"Where did you get the money for this?" Joel wonders aloud.
