Stay on the Path

I roll my eyes at my mom. " I told you already. I'm not scared of the wolf stories. You may believe them, but I do not. They are myths." My mothers eyes fill up with tears. " Your stubbornness is going to get you killed. Ah, but you always were the tough one. Braver then me." She touches my cheek and I smile, trying to cheer her up.
" I'll stay on the path." I say with a sigh. I hate the path! It's soo boring, but once my Mom heard that there might be a wolf in the woods she has made me stay on the path. I knew the woods like the back of my hand. When Dad was alive we would explore them together. And sometimes Berry would join us. Berry is my childhood friend. Our dads were friends. So that means me and Berry will have to marry each other.  That was the rule in this town. You marry your father's best friends son. I'm not really fond of the thought of marriage, but who cares what I think?
" Oh my dear! I do not  deserve you. Your father would be so proud." I let out a tearful sigh. " Thanks Mom. Well the sun is still up so let me take this basket over to granny's." My mom smiles. " Don't let her bite." I laugh, " You know me. I'm her sweet spot." We laugh together and I put on a brown old shawl. My mothers eyes light up and she runs out of the room. " Mom, you forgot to give me. Granny's basket." I start clipping on my shawl when she stops my hand. "Wha..."
I immediately stop talking.
I stare wide eyed as my Mother pulls from the closet a Red hood. It's the most beautiful thing I have ever seen. I just stand there staring at it in awe. My moms laugh fills the room. " Does this mean that you like it?" she asks. I look at her and then wrap her in a bear hug. " Like it? Like it? I love it!!!!!" I really can't believe I'll be wearing something so beautiful. " Well, put it on!" she urges. " Yes. Put it on." I mumble. Mom helps me put it on. And when I look in the mirror I don't recognize myself. I'm about to tell her this when the mirror wavers. It's like a wave and the ripples get bigger. I look away and then look back. No ripples. Weird.
