Chummer wasn't originally going to have such a dramatic purpose. Yes, he still had a redeemable character arc but his motivations were completely different. Chummer was originally going to serve as a sort of rival for the reader's affection. Since his personality isn't too defined I was going to make him a bit of a dork.

The reader would ultimately end up friend zoning him, telling him that they liked Capper instead. Heartbroken, Chummer would secretly witness the confession in "Can I show you something?" before snapping. He would then go to Verko and tell him about Capper's new relationship out of spite.

He would later realize his mistake and try to intervene, just like he did in the final cut. From there everything pretty much progressed like it did in the final draft. At the end of the story the reader would have been reassured by his presence because they knew who he was.

Chummer would still be romantically interested in them but realize that the reader wasn't ready to let go of what they had with Capper. He ends up setting his emotions aside for the reader's sake and accepting the fact that he will only ever be just a friend to them.
